PAUL ANGER - MISSIONARY TO PERU
[letter received on 20/8/08] Back | Next
Greetings from Peru!
JULY 2008
Welcome to our first prayer letter! I first arrived here on the 25th of July after a very rough trip flying over here, where my plane had been hit by lightning so it was delayed for a day in New Zealand! Finally after a 2 day journey I arrived at Peru and was greeted by Denise Zarzar a friend of mine who I had been conversing with via the internet for year (which I was glad that was finally over!) After meeting her 5 year old daughter, Luciana, Denise and I, spent a few weeks getting to know each other better in person. God had been leading us both in scripture in the same direction as to marriage and the mission field so by the time I arrived here a lot of ground had already been covered and approved by God. Denise had organized to have a month off work so we could go scout out the mission field in CHANCHAMAYO! We had such an amazing time there getting to know the people and the culture and just seeing the need for the gospel in that part of the world! God’s word was like a literal road map as we trekked around each day searching for the location He would have us mission in, it was really exciting to have God so directional! Unfortunately I had fallen sick in the last few days of being there so we couldn’t get out much, but we did manage to get out on the last day where God, through his Word led us into any area where we were looking for land, so we gave our number out to a bunch of people who could be selling in the future. God said to wait for further direction when you return back to Lima!
BACK IN LIMA
AUGUST 2008
This is the update as to what is going on right now. We are legally now already married (you do that first in this country) and we are nearly done with getting my visa through. Denise has had instruction from the Word to finish up her work at her place of employment in October. We will need people to be praying for us financially from now, as I am not able to work in this country without a visa. During the days here in Lima I have been working on my Spanish and using my Evanagecube to witness to the local street children. It has been Awesome to be able to step out your door in the morning and walk done the street and have kids from all over the streets coming hear the gospel (and they are very attentive!) We have been attending a Church here called Efata Baptist Church (for the hearing and impaired) so we will be trying to get the local street children along to that church. It has been really encouraging to see God working in Efata Baptist Church, each week the Pastor gives a closing gospel message and there always seems to be new converts and people being added to the Church (Acts 2:47). Efata is located in one of the roughest places in Lima, where there are a lot of rapes, muggings and murders, but there seems to be so many people seeking the truth. Please keep Efata Baptist Church in your prayers also.
THE BIG PICTURE
JANUARY-FEBUARY 2009
Our Goal is to first find some land in Chanchamayo where we can build a house, and a large open shelter for a Church (which will be available to all who want to learn about God 24/7) and this will also be the hub for Sunday services. Furthering on from that, I need to train and disciple national men so they then can start their own ministry with their own village people.
Lord willing, we would like to be able to start several churches in the surrounding villages here, with their own national Pastors, so we can teach and disciple nationals to go deep into the Amazon Peruvian boarders were there are estimated to be around 50 tribes who have never had contact with the outside world as yet. To do this job is an extremely physically taxing mission. There are so many elements with nature that a normal white person would find hard to do, even just getting up and over the Andes here is difficult if you have never experienced high altitude pressure before, so there are many things to consider before even venturing into the outskirts of the Amazon, I had been there for two weeks and suffered from stomach viruses and weakness and dizziness (and I’m sure there is much more of that to come!)
Now this part of the ministry will ultimately be determined on the dedication and prayerful giving from Australia and that is to set up a Reaching Beyond Borders Camp site for the nationals and international youth to come and train here for the mission field.
This will involve:
- 6 weeks of hard training
- Hiking up treacherous trails
- Living off the land
- Being discipled each night
- Visiting local tribes
- Reading and studying and applying God’s Word
- Spending time with others who desire to be part of the Great Commission (Mark 16:15)
- Suffering all kinds of persecution
- Learning how to sustain home sickness and illnesses
All for name of JESUS! (2 Corinthians 11:23-30)
What could be more exciting than spending your holiday vacations running through the Amazon Jungle being chased by tribal men with spears? (Just kidding) Hey but this does happen here!
OUR PRAYER NEEDS FOR THE FIELD

[snip section]
One great man of God said to me before I ventured out here to Peru, He said “Paul, God is going to finish the job of reaching the unreached one way or another, its all there in the prophecies”... I stopped and thought about that, and it was true, God has it all planned and mapped out.
It finally sunk into my head that God does have it all planned and He knows the end product! Then I said to my friend: “So what is your point? He said: “Well Paul, now you have a decision to make, do you want to be a part of the Great Commission?”
You see your Relationship to your God is all tied up in the decisions you choose to make, whether your letter-boxing tracts, witnessing to the elderly, or sharing the Gospel in the streets, or whatever ministry God has called you to do, you have chosen to obey and say...”Here am I Lord, send me”. Now if you haven’t said yes to sharing the Gospel then you’re the one disobeying and missing out!
I hope and pray you are all doing the work God has called you to do and prayerfully seeking out through scripture what he would have you do, and I will be doing my best to keep you updated as to what is happening here in Peru,
Love and Prayers
