General Construction

  • All nestbox dimensions at this site are;
    • in millimetres.
    • inside dimensions and do not allow for selected wood thickness.
    • nominal and can be varied by 10% without detriment.
  • The nest should be made from thick wood so it seems and feels like a hollow log. The thicker and rougher the wood; the better.
  • Use galvanised nails and plenty of Wood Glue.
  • You may like to make one of the sides of your nest hinged. This way the side can be opened so the box can be cleaned and any unwanted nesting material (and eggs) can be thrown out.
  • Drill several small holes in the base of the nest to drain any moisture that may accumulate inside the nest.
  • Use plenty of paint on the exposed areas to protect the wood from the weather.
