Our Coaches for 2008

Our coaches and class helpers are dedicated to helping all pupils to achieve their best. All coaches continue their professional development and education by attending seminars and coaching conferences. The coaches are accredited by AIS and all have First aid training to ensure any injuries are appropriately and quickly treated.

Susan Smith – Principal Coach, Recreational Class Coach and Senior Coach 2008

My sister Jenny and I introduced Calisthenics to the Airport West area over 40 years ago through our connection with St Phillips Church. During this period of time I have seen many changes in this sport. We once used piano but now have a wide range of music to choose from – our costumes consisted of one nylon leotard with a club emblem - we now have beautiful patterned lycra’s of every colour of the rainbow.

I love to see these pupils develop their skills in the sport and enjoy the excitement of meeting with friends in class and on stage. Over the years I have coached all age groups within the Competitive Classes introduced Recreational Classes to children with All Abilities within our own College and at a Special School.

I also co-coach Pupil Skills and in the past Solo work.

We have a great team of very talented and enthusiastic coaches who are looking forward to another challenging but exciting year.

Caroline Smith - Tinies Coach, Sub Junior Coach and Intermediate Co-Coach 2008

I started my calisthenics career at the age of 18 months at Westaire Calisthenic College Inc. and continued as a pupil for 26 years. I completed my Grade 1 pupil skill exam and competed for 4 years in Graceful Solos.

My coaching career started as a class helper at the age of 12. Since then I have assisted in all groups. In 1995 I achieved my Level 1 coaching certificate and have coached in all age groups. I am very passionate about calisthenics and its benefits to the children who participate in this wonderful sport. The growth and confidence it gives to the children is what inspires me to continue coaching.

Carolyn Toomey – Junior & Intermediate Co-Coach 2008

My Calisthenics career began in 1982 when I was 4 years of age.  I competed with Raieburn Calisthenics for 10 years and received their Club Girl award in 1991.  I came to Westaire Calisthenics in 1992 as a young Senior and have enjoyed developing my Calisthenics skills, achieving my Grade 4 and working with great coaches and team-mates throughout my career.
I was introduced to the challenges of assist coaching with Sue and Marilyn in 2000 with the Sub Junior Team.  In 2002 I received my level 1 Coaching Accreditation  and Co-Coached a great bunch of successful Sub-Juniors.  The last 4 years I have enjoyed solo and co-coaching the Juniors.  They are a great age group to coach and the girls have been fantastic.  This year I look forward to also co-coaching in the Inters!  I hope I can create some challenging and exciting work for both groups and look forward to a fun and successful year!

Erica Laing- Junior & Intermediate Co-Coach 2008

I started my Calisthenics passion in 1986 at the age of 4 at a non-competitive club in Gisborne.  I received their Club Girl award in 1991 and sadly left the club in 1993 when it closed.  I then moved to Sunbury School of Calisthenics where as a 1st year Inter I got my first taste of competitive  Calisthenics and have never looked back.  I have received most consistent awards on two occasions once in 1994 and again in 1998.  I have been with the club for 14 years and retired at the conclusion of 2007.

I began my Coaching interest in 1997 at the age of 14 where I assisted the Tinies at Sunbury for 3 years.  In 2000 I was Co-Coaching Juniors and obtained my Level 1 Coaching Accreditation later in the year.   From 2001 to 2004 I coached Sunbury Intermediates.  I have been Juniors Co-Coach at Westaire since 2005 and this year I will also be Co-Coaching the Inters.

To me Calisthenics is about friendship and fun, it has taught me so much and in so many ways, especially my self-confidence.  As a Coach my main goals are to pass on my knowledge and passion of the sport to others.  I am always looking to develop my techniques and coaching style to improve myself and others, as well as making new friends.

Outside of Calisthenics I enjoy going the movies, Musicals, shopping and going to the beach. I am also a Primary School Teacher.

Marilyn Killender – Intermediate Co-Coach 2008

I began calisthenics as a pupil at the age of 2 and continued to compete for another 28 years. Through that time I have made wonderful friends and have had many memorable experiences.  I gained my level 1 coach accreditation so I was able to give back to calisthenics what I had received. Over the years I have coached pupil exams, sub juniors, juniors, recreational and at Ascot Vale Special School.  This year I am looking forward to a new challenge of co-coaching Inters.

Outside of calisthenics I am married and have 3 wonderful boys.

Kylie Delacoe – Senior Co-Coach 2008

My calisthenics “career” began at the age of 3, but all I did was sit in the corner saying “I want a stick!” so we tried again when I was 7 and I have been involved ever since. I am a fourth generation calisthenics girl so it is hard to escape the sport! My grandmother performed her graceful solo at Ballarat and my one year old daughter already owns a rod and clubs!

I competed for Monash CC for about 5 years but they didn’t go to Ballarat so I went to Dandenong until its closure, followed by being a member of Jeaden Seniors until 2000, when I chose to concentrate on coaching. Since 1996, I have coached solos, Juniors, Inters and Seniors (not all at once!), and I was also fortunate enough to assist the State Team for 3 years, winning the national title on 2 occasions. Even though I am now busy with a daughter and working part-time, I still love coaching and enjoy being a part of the calisthenics ‘world’. I came to Westaire last year, looking to be a part of a friendly team and they have enabled me to balance work, family and calisthenics, and I am hoping to continue that this year and beyond.
