Going to the trouble to travel to more remote areas will reward you with some really spectacular experiences. For the more adventurous there is also world standard freshwater cavern and cave diving in both the South East and extreme West of the state.

Water temperature varies from 12 to 14 Centigrade in mid winter to 20 to 22 degrees in summer. I dive in a Dacor/Moray 175 semi dry suit in winter and a one piece 3mm suit in summer.

Visibility varies from a few metres in Gulf waters in poor sea conditions to more than 30 metres off the coast of Kangaroo Island and in the open ocean.

SA is known world wide for Phycodurus eques, the Leafy Seadragon.

Southern Right whales are making a comeback and are now seasonal visitors to our metropolitan waters, but approaching closer than 30 metres from them is currently prohibited.

Other highlights include three species of seals or sea lions, and of course their major predator, the Great White shark.
