The Mighty Port Adelaide Football Club
Round 8
Port Adelaide Power V
Port Adelaide
20.9 (129)
Geelong
7.12 (54)

Port Adelaide has overcome the inclement weather and an indifferent Geelong performance to record its fifth win for season 2002.

Strong winds and heavy rain before the match failed to affect the Power as they cruised to a 20.9 (129) to 7.12 (54) victory without being seriously challenged by the Cats at any stage.

Power captain Matthew Primus won the toss and gave his side first use of the howling gale at Football Park and his team-mates didn't let him down, dominating possession and leaping out to a 34-point lead at quarter time. The Power adapted well to the tricky conditions kicking long and direct at goal - while the young Cats side was guilty of attempting to over-finesse the ball. Geelong fans hopeful of a comeback with the aid of the breeze in the second term were quickly disappointed as the Power continued to outclass its opposition.

After being stretchered from the field last week against Brisbane, Primus was again the dominant ruckman, feeding Jarrad Schofield, Josh Francou and Nick Stevens who used the ball with telling efficiency on most occasions. Matthew Scarlett was the only clear winner for the Cats, but his efforts weren't nearly enough to stem the tide as Port's midfield runners controlled the centre square all day.

The Cats appeared to lift their intensity a notch after the half-time break but their resistance was far too short-lived as Port reasserted its dominance easily - eventually running out 75-point winners.
