Subiaco, House of Pain ... Yah Right! Fortress
Shmortress!
Seven on the trot is a record for the club and
certainly done in brilliant fashion. The opening of the game
was pretty intense and I thought, "Shit, they're really
going for it" especially with it being Dale Kickett's
last game and all. Some pretty blatant errors in front of
goal meant we kicked eight behinds before we scored our first
goal which didn't look good at the time.
So Freo held us pretty well until half time
and I didn't really see anything out of the ordinary that
made me sit up and take notice. It was easy to see where it
was going for Freo when their stats showed all of their marks
around the ground because they played their chippy stop-start
game. It reminded me of Port a couple of years back and really
indicated how far we have come.
After half time it was simply a show of class.
Dew, Tredrea and Wanganeen really showed their class and put
together some really brilliant work that was inspirational.
Dew is sucha freak on goal and when you can snap on your right
leg when you're a left footer from some very freakish angles
and still put them through is unbelievable. Tredders is truly
becoming the best centre half forward in the comp by a country
mile.
So they put the pedal to the metal and absolutely
demolished Freo. At the start of the game when they showed
the super on TV that said we beat them by 92 points last time
we met them at Subiaco, I thought, not this time. Boy, we
were bloody close though!
Hopefully we can keep injury free and work our
way towards a successful finals campaign in September. The
media's talking up our position as Premiership favourites
and it's certainly way too soon to do that but the way the
season has panned out so far, it feels like we are just starting
to hit our straps at the right time.
My last word is a huge hearty round of congratulations
to the one and only Choco - Mark Williams, on being made a
member of the AFL Club given this was his 300th game as player
and coach. Well done, Mark. We are very proud of your achievements.
I will never forget the podium presentation at the Ansett
Cup Final win over Brisbane in 2001 when he was facing the
members and turned and pointed to the outer and said "This
is for you guys, the real fans"
Ladder: 44 points,
No. 1. 4 points clear of Brisbane and Collingwood on 40.
Highlight:
1) Wanganeen's 3rd quarter individual effort on
goal, beginning at half back. Bloody superb.
2) Dom Cassisi's great debut with some really good gutsy efforts
3) Poulton's hip and shoulder on Jeff Farmer.
Lowlight:
1) French's report for striking Croad. Didn't
see it. I hate waiting 'til Monday night tribunal.
