Port Adelaide has broken through to record its
first win over the Kangaroos since entering the AFL in 1997.
The Power was forced to work hard for three quarters by a
determined Kangaroo outfit but ran away with the game in the
last term to post a 15.13 (103) to 7.7 (49) victory at AAMI
Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Peter Burgoyne and Nick Stevens were the standouts
for Port – finishing the game with 26 and 25 disposals
respectively – while Adam Simpson worked tirelessly
for the Roos all day to finish with 28.
Kangaroos’ captain Anthony Stevens won
the toss and elected to kick with a strong breeze in the first
quarter but it was the Power that made the most of the early
going.
Adam Kingsley gathered 12 first-quarter possessions
and delivered into his attacking 50 three times where Peter
and Shaun Burgoyne lurked dangerously for the Power.
Port led by three points at the first break
and quickly extended that lead early in the second term with
goals to Chad Cornes and Shaun Burgoyne.
The Power was dominating around the ground but
failed to capitalise on the scoreboard, allowing the Roos
to work back into the match with goals to Shannon Grant and
a late major to Jess Sinclair reducing the deficit to a mere
two points at half time.
Peter Burgoyne was the prime-mover for Port
with 18 possessions and five clearances for the half, while
Simpson continued to work hard for the Kangaroos – amassing
19 first-half disposals – and was ably assisted by Sinclair
with 14.
Port Adelaide again threatened to run away with
the game early in the third term, scoring three unanswered
goals – including Byron Pickett’s second –
to establish a 19-point break 16 minutes into the quarter.
The Kangaroos’ cause wasn’t helped
by the loss of Sinclair who left the field midway through
the term after being met solidly by Chad Cornes. However,
they continued to battle hard and were still in the hunt when
Leigh Brown kicked his first to make the deficit 12 points
at the last break.
Any hope of a come-from-behind win was quickly
extinguished in the last quarter as the Power finished full
of running – keeping the Roos scoreless and piling on
6.6 to run out 54-point victors.
Shaun Burgoyne capped off a solid effort with
his fourth goal of the day while Pickett celebrated his first
match against his old club in style with his third major of
the match early in the last.
