Star Trek movie uniform
This costume was originally made for the Australian Premiere of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home in late 1986.
This was one of my early attempts at making a costume as opposed to converting something into a costume.
The trousers were from a dinner suit that I had found in a second hand shop to which I sewed a red stripe along the outside of each leg.
The Star Fleet tunic was made from red wool. The front panels were lined in white flannel but the rest of the jacket was unlined. In hindsight lining it would have made it sit better but I ran out of time. The pattern itself was rather complicated (given my limited sewing skills at the time) and even stumped a few of the more active costumers I knew. The various insignia on the costume we bought at cons or from SF specialty stores. The belt was a normal leather belt with a bad replica of the movie buckle on it. This was later replaced with a vinyl belt finished to look more like the movie belt and a better version of the belt buckle.
Under the tunic was a white skivvy. The collar had been folded in half and stuffed with wading and then stitched vertically around the neck. While it didn't look identical to the actual movie shirt it was close. Of course having all this additional stitching meant it no longer stretched and a zip had to be put in along the a shoulder seam.
The Andorian make-up was something I chose because, until then, I'd never seen anyone else do an Andorian costume. Klingons and Vulcans were all over the damn place and the occasional Romulan but I'd never seen an Andorian fan. The antennae were moulded out of blue Fimo (with two little rubber suction cups on the end) and then attached to an alice band. A "wig" of polyester wadding was sewn into shape with two holes in the back for the antennae to stick through. The alice band sat over the crown of my head and the wadding wig help to keep the antennae in place as well as cover the alice band. My face was covered with blue stage make-up and my hands were tight-fitting dishwashing gloves!
Not a bad effort I thought!
Of course once I had seen the movie I discovered that they'd put an Andorian in the movie but some git had redone the make-up design and given them ears! Idiots!
Some time later I decided to combine my kilt with the Star Trek jacket. After all Scotty was seen wearing his kilt in the original series I figured he would have something similar with the new uniforms.
I managed to find a nice Star Fleet insignia just the right size to fit within the scrollwork of the belt-buckle where it was promtly attached - with blutak!
The blue insignia in the middle was a fan-replica of the UFP Deligate badge that I touched up.
