Clowns

I think I would have been about 8 years old when this photo was taken. As part of the local Yakkerboo Festival (don't ask). My Mum, my brother and I dressed as clowns and were selling raffle tickets for some sort of hamper that we were trunddling around in a wheel-barrow.

Sadly the original photo has faded badly so the colour is a bit washed out.

So. From the ground up:

  • A pair of my Dad's old Dunlop Volley runners. They had newspaper stuffed into the toe so they wouldn't fall off my feet. I think it also had a domed toe that had been added on with white electrical tape or something.
  • Coloured stripey socks. Yellow, red and green I think.
  • Grey trousers. I remember them having a wire coathanger worked into the waist to make them sit out more. I wouldn't need that now
  • Normal white shirt.
  • My grandfather's tail coat. I had to roll the sleeves up because I was little. You can see that the tails at the back are almost touching the ground.
  • The tie was this enormous wide thing that was black with red polka dots. I'm pretty sure there was a matching pocket handkerchief but I don't remember.
  • Navy cotton gloves with the fingers cut out. Very Charlie Chaplin.
  • Grey felt hat with the crown pushed up.
  • The make-up was white zinc cream! Yes you read that right. I remember the nose was a pingpong ball that had a piece cut out and was held on by white elastic string. Bloody thing hurt!
  • I don't know if this was my first costume but it was certainly an early one.
