19th Century Fireman

From Berwick's 150th Birthday celebrations

Many years ago I was a volunteer for the Melbourne Fire Museum (which has since been renamed the Fire Services Museum). As part of my interest in the group I set about putting together as close a copy of the Melbourne Metropolitan Fire Brigade uniform as I could.

The brass fire helmet I'm holding is my own. My Dad had bought two as a trash and treasure stall back in the 70s from someone who was throwing them out ($10 each!). Sadly by the time of the photo my head was just that bit too big, which is why I'm holding it rather than wearing it.

'Saved' by Charles Vigor (c.1890)The trousers were current CFA issue and of navy wool. The tunic was an older issue of the MFB jacket and also of navy wool. Buttons were brass MFB buttons (the current ones were now silver) and the number on the left breast was an old tram conductor's ID number.

The belt was authentic MFB as was the axe on my left. The hydrant key on the right was acquired via the SEC who still used brass keys.

The boots came from a disposal shop.
