Scottish kilt

Kerr tartan sett

My family has had a long association with Scotland and have encouraged an affection for things Scottish down through those generations who were born in Australia. I'm quite fond of wearing a kilt and find it not only very comfortable but quite warm.

The connection to the Kerr clan goes back to my Great-great-grandmother who was quite proud of her family clan, something she passed on to her children before they emmigrated to Australia. Even though my surname no longer relates back to the clan, such was the family's pride in it's Scottish heritage that it's passed on through the generations.

The photo on the left was taken shortly after I bought my first kilt sometime around 1986 I think. The shirt had been made by a friend and was a little more romantic than the modern scottish dress. The photo on the right illustrates how I've combined my preference for dark colours with my wearing of the kilt.

So I suppose it's sort of a costume but not in the normal sense. More in the sense of a mode of dress.

I've got a kilt, a dress plaid, a piper's plaid, a waistcoat (that no longer fits) and a dinner jacket all in the Kerr tartan. It would probably be a bit overwhelming if it was all out at once.

I have notions of putting together a set Jacobite clothes but that's something in the pipline. There's a few other things I'd like to do first but it's still something I've been collecting referrences for.
