Lord and Lady Lovecraft

The 1995 Gothic Ball

Inspired by a costume pair from one of the Costume-Cons from years ago, my girlfriend and I attempted to make our own version of Lord and Lady Lovecraft.

I was the first time I had ever sewn velvet. So what do I use for the fabric? German double velvet! If you're going to have hassles then make sure you go all the way.

The coat was based on a late 18th century men's jacket. The cuffs, collar and pocket flaps (as well as the cuffs and stomacher on the dress) were hand-sewn with scrunched black fabric with gold thread running through it and then set with various doll and teddybear eyes to give it a somewhat cthulhu-ish look. I even put some of the eyes that open and close (like when you lie a doll down) into the sleeves so they'd move with my arms.

The waistcoat was a blue silk with a rose pattern woven into the design. The buttons on the waistcoat were pewter spiders that had a loop glued into the abodmen section and then sewn on to the fabric.

The head of the walking cane is an anubis head that I scuplted in wax and then had professionally cast for me.
