Beware the Ides of March
Imperial Roman Toga

Metres and metres of bedsheet cotton!

Not a particularly hard costume to make but trying to work out the pattern based on the available fabric width was the crucial point. This was also my first attempt at using Karen's industrial sewing machine at full speed. Sadly I had not prewashed the "imperial purple" trim that I attached to the edge of the toga (as it was a bit of a rushed finish) and after its first trip into the washing machine I ended up with a slightly pink toga The sandles weren't particularly authentic but then it was being made for an Ides of March party not for historical authenticity!

Actually the hardest part about the toga is putting it on. Working out the right point to start at so that it drapes nicely without falling off takes a couple of attempts. Keeping it at that point while enjoying your party is a constant source of readjustment. But it was surprisingly quite warm. I suppose all that cotton is its own best insulator.
