Sarah returns to work, leaving Scott at home with the small ones. No sooner is Sarah back than she is appointed Secretary of the S.I.S.A.L. committee, and shortly thereafter appointed to the Editorial Board of the national Australian Law Librarian Journal.
Scott and Jared pay a flying visit to the West to recognise 18 years of Scott being a father, the start of his Long Service Leave, and to celebrate Nicquel May Barkla reaching adulthood. Friends and family old and new warm Nix's apartment, and are in turn warmed by Malibu, Cointreau, vodka and pineapple shooters. Back to Adelaide for Owen's first Fathers Day, and in another first: Scott doesn't go to work on Monday 3rd Sept (or the day after that, or....:-)!
It has taken 7 months, for St Matthews, Marryatville who no
longer conduct indiscriminate baptism to agree that Owen
William Miles Barkla may be head wetted in the same place where
Ella was so favoured, and where generations of family have been
married, buried and a fulfilled a few functions inbetween.
Nevertheless, Owen dons the bonnnet, the cream dress, and no
small amount of charm for the day. Scott has a champagne, which
Ella later immortalises fancifully as a nightly event in her
Pre-School Father's Day Breakfast Report: My Daddy.
Sarah, Ella and Owen go by road to Sydney with GrandJudy. Scott goes to Perth (by plane) for the week, and Jared goes to GrandJohn's. Sarah and the munchkins catch up with Aunty Rosemary at Tooronga and the QBE birdshow.
The Party of 5 from Adelaide descends on South Perth for the Party of Parties. Barry's family are complemented by ourselves and Aunt Helen and Uncle Geoff from Sydney. Mum and Barry meet Owen for the first time and he turns on the charm.
It takes some persuasion to get Nix into the Purple, Green, Red and White, but, certain she would never be recognised, she has a ball with Dad as Fremantle defeat the Saints at Subiaco.
Jared's crew wins their Head of the River race against St Peters College for the second year running. One of only two PAC victories on the day. Sweet.
Owen, barely two months old, dons the shirt and 3/4 pants, Sarah is Matron of Honour, Ella discovers her vocation as a Flower Girl, Jared Ushes, and somewhere in there Bec and Brooke get married.
Born 2:02am 3.23 kg (7lb 2oz) See the world's most neglected blog for details and photos.
Apologies for the lack of updates here - it's not that we haven't been taking photos - just that a whole year seems to have gotten away from me :-(
Jared wins the Prince Alfred College Prize for German at an Advanced Level. Sarah, Dad and Granddad attend the aptly named "Speech Night" to see him receive the honours. In recent weeks Jared has taken up Rowing, and in an oft rain-interrupted cricket term finished with a batting average of 16 and bowling figures of 1 for 12. Howzat?!

Nix comes to stay for a couple of months, just in time
for the Birthday Season.
August 27 saw Ella turn 2. Many small friends, older
siblings and adoring relatives came to call. Check out the
Bike! Fun, Food and more
food, not to mention two Birthday cakes, including a Nix
Original.
Scott and Jared piked out early to see the Dockers end their season against the reviled Port Power.
Nix celebrated her 16 candles with the family at Pauls in Norwood, and crafted another chocolate masterpiece for the occasion. There was even a sparkly Red Hat which had nothing at all to do with her Dad's operating system of choice.
Sarah commences permanent part-time as a Law Librarian with a prominent Adelaide practice, while continuing to work as an Information Management Consultant in her increasingly sparse spare time. Then, of course, there's being Ella's Mummy...
Ella and Jared set out with the Varcoes for a week in Sydney. Jared was last in Sydney when he was the age Ella is now.
Jared and Scott support the Fremantle Dockers at AAMI Stadium as they take on the Adelaide Crows in a 40,000 strong partisan crowd with lone pockets of the red white green and purple. We didn't win, but we gave them one helluva scare in the final quarter.
Scott and Sarah win tickets to a preview of the new Doctor Who series at the ABC studios in Adelaide.
Sarah starts a new position with an Information Management consultancy firm, Jared takes up Rugby (Union), and Scott tours the River City, the Silver City and the Rainy City in short succession.
Evelyn Margaret Rose McKay turns five, and decided she is big enough to spend the night at someone else's house. Also that the someones else should be her cousins, Uncle, Aunt and GrandDood in Adelaide. Ella revels in having another half-size-human around, even if her toys do become all the more precious for having to share.
Nix comes to vistit and brings a furry friend.
Jared's back! He lost a term, a trip to Canberra, and still
unexplained quantities of underwear, but he's back, he's here and
he's TALLER THAN DAD! Somewhere in the far west Jared passed that
long coveted Centimetrestone. (Gotta love the metric system). Now
he has returned to look down on us all. But wait! Who is this
walking, babbling, one-something individual coming towards him?
Surely not the little baby he left behind? Bruvva!!!
,
yawps Ella.
George Bradbury and Daryl Gordon tie the knot. Sarah is the Groom's Matron of Honour. The deed is done as the 1812 Overture trumpets across the Kooyonga fairways, heralding dire fates for tardy hairdressers.
Goodnight Irene, Goodnight. I'll see you in my dreams.
Scott, Sarah and Eleanor sojourn to Albury. Meeting cousins long
lost, never forgotten. Ella takes to the skies, but doesn't take
to the rent-a-carseat. And learns motels are just big
playrooms.

September 14th, 2004: VisitorsMum and Barry visit from Western Australia to see
Jared's performance in "Kids at Sea" and meet Ella. No longer! If there isn't going to be a 25-year reunion for Year 7 at Camboon Primary School, I'll host one right here! Check out the school pages. September 2nd, 2004: Graduation! It's official: Sarah Louise Barkla
BA(Hons)GradDipInfoStudies Showing undaunted perseverance across years, surnames, parenthood and hemispheres, Sarah is now a qualified Librarian. Not bad for a Pisces. |
Eleanor Isabella Barkla waited 366 days for the gigglefest that was her first birthday. Family and friends gathered from near (and nearer) to dote on an appreciative smile or twelve. Many noisy toys were brought to bear, and many bears had much to say about that, but Eleanor was nothing short of delighted.
Jared brings home distinctions in the Australasian Science and English competitions, Honour Certificates for German and all-round excellence, AND places second while representing PAC in the South Australian Schools Poetry Recital competition.
Jared returns from a week's holiday in Perth. Nikki comes to Adelaide for a visit. Scott starts leave, Ella loses a shoe, GranJohn turns 61, and goes a-fishing.
Jared wins the James Ashton Prize and a place on the Honour Board.
With a victory in the 50m Freestyle and a Wig to dye
for...Jared grabbed honours in the team events too. And who said
they could never get the hang of Thursdays?
Jared Ushered in the Last Year of Not Being A Teenager in the early hours of January 15.
On a chilly wet day before Christmas...wait a
minute..This is Adelaide in Summer!!!? 38mm of Rain fell to
baptise Eleanor and many of her guests. The outdoor undercover
area of the house was a godsend, the indoor area was a duckpond
:-( But the lights were restored to the interior of St Matthew's Church in
Marryatville before some 60 family members and friends convened
to welcome Eleanor. (And didn't Rector Tim do a splendid job of
mostly pronouncing her name correctly!)
PAC Prep School Speech Night. Jared wins Dux of Year 6!!! Coming Just 2 weeks after JB Captained the PAC B Cricket Team to a term-record victory over Saint Peters....Well done JB!

Family trip to Melbourne. Ella meets her Grandfather (GrandDood, as Evelyn would have it) and Jared meets cousins first, second and never very far removed.
Scott, Sarah and GrandJudy cheer Chapple House (and Jared) to victory in the Prince Alfred College Prep School annual Sports Carnival.
Eleanor Isabella Barkla was born at 4:21pm, weighing 6lb 8oz at Burnside War Memorial Hospital. An instant blonde hairhaired, blue-eyed beauty, upon making her entrance she hit a sustained G for the doctor with resonant vibrato worthy of her AUCS heritage.
Sarah is doing fine.
Scott and Jared are very pleased.
Nikki sends her congratulations.
Adelaide: A surprise of the short-notice kind, Dad isflown to Adelaide for this remarkable milestone event. Dinner with GrandJohn and GrandJudy, Bec, Brooke and the Barklas.
After three years away, Scott, Sarah, Nicquel and Jared return to Australia from Malaysia.
Jared spent his birthday in the Genting Highlands. Just about the only place in peninsular Malaysia where the temperature drops below 30 degrees and the humidity puts its shirt back on.
In celebration of the overlapping festivals of Deepavali, Christmas and Hari Raya, Fairview International School held a concert at the new Great Eastern Auditorium, Ampang. Nikki sang several pieces with the choir and orchestra.
Wedding at St Matthews Church, Marrayatville, and spectacularly elegant reception at the Varcoes'.
