I know
nothing about Barbosa's life prior to his first murder so
this is where we will have to start.
The victim was a nine year old girl. She was 'very brutally
raped' in the words of one policeman. It happened in
Columbia, Barbosa's native country and he was arrested for
the crime. He was then convicted of murder and sentenced to
life in prison.
In 1986 he managed to escape prison. He fled to Ecuador.
It was in Ecuador that Daniel Barbosa really made his mark
in the world of serial murder. In the city of Guayaquil 55
young girls went missing during his fourteen months of
living there. I'm sure that you will all appreciate the
amount of work he must have done to stay out of the eyes of
police while committing a murder spree that must rank up
there with the all time greats.
Not all of the bodies of these young girls showed up, but
from those that did we know that this guy was truly brutal.
He had hacked, slashed and crushed the girls with a machete.
I know that when I see crime scene photo's of what a machete
type instrument does to an adult it isn't a pleasant
picture, so what it did to these young girls must have been
pretty horrific.
Along with the brutalized bodies police also found sweet
wrappers at the crime scene, leading to the assumption that
the killer had lured the kiddies with candy. A very simple
M.O., but one that would eventually lead to Barbosa's
downfall.
In June 1988, police discovered the body of yet another
young girl, 12 year old Gloria Andino. She was killed in the
same manner as the previous victims, but there was a slight
difference at the crime scene, she was clutching a candy
wrapper. This wrapper was bagged, and when checked later for
finger prints one was discovered that didn't belong to the
victim. Police quickly searched their files and came up with
a match, Daniel Camargo Barbosa.
Around the same time that police discovered who the murderer
was a motorbike patrolman stopped a man behaving
suspiciously near the place where Gloria Andino's corpse was
found. The officer questioned the man, then searched him. He
found a photo of an earlier victim in the suspicious mans
pocket, so decide to arrest him. I guess that I don't have
to tell you who the man was.
Under intense questioning Barbosa gave it all up. He
admitted to all the murders that the he was suspected of,
and even added a couple more for good measure. The confessed
murders would soon amount to 71. Police asked for him to
show him where they could find the latest few girls that had
gone missing and he led them to six fairly fresh dumping
sites.
Follow up interviews confirmed that Barbosa had lured the
girls with sweets. He also said that he used new ball point
pens as bait. I guess they were hard to get in Ecuador, I
can't think why anyone would take off with a stranger for a
pen.
Anyway, let's back to his confessions.
He also said that he liked the girls to be young because he
liked virgins. He said that it gave him great satisfaction
to see girls cry when he fucked them. I don't really get
this because I reckon that anyone would cry if they were
raped and knew that the guy was probably going to kill you
afterwards (I know that I would).
At his trial in 1989 he took the stand and told of the
murders he committed in five different cities across the
country. But despite the obvious brutality of his crimes he
was sentenced to only 16 years in prison, the maximum in
Ecuador. So it would seem that he will be released sometime
around 2005. Isn't that a lovely thought?
UPDATE
On July 26, 1999, I received an email from Frank Villagomez
who informed me that Barbosa is dead. Apparently he was
killed in prison by another prisoner who happened to be a
cousin of one of his many victims. This is quite sad news
for me as I was really looking forward to 2005 when we
should have been flooded with news stories of his release.

MY OPINION
One of the few killers that claim a huge figure that I
believe. I think this guy is really one of the most amazing
killers ever. But as he's South American he is almost
completely overlooked. Can you imagine a criminal like this
being ignored in North America. Even if he only killed one
U.S. citizen he would have been regarded as a great, but in
the tradition of so many others, he is ignored because his
victims don't matter to the major publishing countries. This
really shits me, purely because I want to know more. This
really is one of the greatest killers ever. To try and name
another, other than Lopez, that killed more than 50 in a
year is almost impossible. And it is for this reason that I
will forever rate Daniel Barbosa as one of the best ever.
