Here's a
small story from Bangladesh. Unfortunately I've only been
able to get one AP story on the case so my knowledge is very
limited. Despite that I'm sure you'll all see why I found it
so interesting.
It seems that the 'hero' of the tale - Rashida (who goes by
only one name) - was a bit of a nutcase. She was so bad in
fact that on Friday, September 17, 1999, her husband, Abdul
Khaleq, a poor farmer, told her to he wanted out of the
marriage. He had had enough, and it was time for them to
look into divorce.
This really upset Rashida, and no doubt shamed her also, so
after her old man went to work she took a meat cleaver up
into the kids bedrooms. In the ensuing minutes she slaughter
all four of the couples daughters. She then poured a little
accelerant around the house and set it alight.
Police recovered the charred bodies of the girls, aged 2 to
8, at the house in Khodabakshpur village, 70 miles north of
the capital, Dhaka. But there was no Rashida.
She didn't last long though, and was arrested soon
afterward. Her husband was also taken in to police
headquarters for questioning, but was released soon after.
Now my knowledge on the subject is fairly limited but it
seems Muslims can do 'impromptu' divorces very simply.
According to law in Bangladesh it is illegal to do these
'impromptu' divorces, but they are still carried out by the
high Muslim population of the country.
But I guess it doesn't matter now anyway. Abdul got rid of
the wife, and he doesn't have to worry about alimony, so he
kind of got what he wanted. Although I don't think anyone
wants to have their kids slaughtered.
