"I
was a greedy, ravenous individual, hungry for life,
determined to rise from the bottom...
it wasn't me!"
The final words to his jury.
A rare
Austrian serial killer, Unterweger started killing in 1976.
The victim, 18-year-old Margaret Schaefer, was beaten then
strangled with her own bra. Unterweger was arrested for this
murder and claimed that this victim was a prostitute, but
this is highly unlikely. Unterweger was 24 at the time, and
was given life imprisonment for the murder.
While in
prison he discovered literature, and wrote poetry, a novel
and an autobiography. He received quite a bit of success
from his writing and he was eventually given parole in 1990.
In
October, 1990, a prostitute was found dead. AND in the first
few months of 1991 six more women disappeared. It seemed
that Jack still liked killing people.
During
these months Unterweger's writing success continued and he
went to the U.S.A. to promote his work. During his time in
L.A. three prostitutes were murdered. Seemed back luck just
followed Unterweger around. Bad luck for whores that is.
On the
way back to Austria, Unterweger stopped off in Prague where
he met another prostitute, Blanka Bockova, who was found
murdered not long after (not surprisingly).
By this
time Austrian police had figured Unterweger out and began
questioning him regularly. Eventually Unterweger cracked and
fled to America - Florida to be precise - where he was
arrested and extradited back to Austria.
Unterweger was found guilty of nine murders despite there
being little evidence to prove it beyond doubt, and was
found hanging from his cell roof less than 24 hours after
being sentenced to life for a second time. Out of interest
the ad hoc rope used was made out of shoelaces and a track
suit cord.
