Band #10 The original "Toybox"

During my time playing in my first duo "Crash", an opportunity arose to join a band as well. As it happens, some good friends of mine had a band that was doing ok. Suddenly at the end of a gig, the singer declared that this had been his last gig, he was leaving town. The drummer saw this as an opportunity to cut loose as well due to health problems. This left my friends with no band. I called around one day to offer my services as a singer and guitar player until they could find someone else.
This is where the table was turned.
Dean, who was the lead guitarist informed me that they had a new female singer, but asked if I would consider being thier drummer. I was a bit dumb founded since I had never really been a drummer. I just happened to have a drum kit and Dean thought it would be a quick way to get the band up and running again. So being the kind of person that likes a challenge, I decided to go for it. I spent loads more money on an even bigger drum kit and loads of cymbals and all sorts of gear that I could afford. I wasn't the greatest drummer to start with although I could keep a beat. Slowly but surely I practiced and found that I could do things I never thought possible.
Toybox went on to play the live scene across northern NSW for two years and was by far one of the most fun times of my musical career. I would certainly enjoy playing with these guys again anytime and I remain in contact with them all.
Toybox was Roz Paul (lead vocals), Dale King (Bass Guitar), Dean Lawrence (Lead guitar) and myself on drums.
Keep Smilin....

Hey we caught Toybox when passing through Armidale on our way to Toowoomba. We booked a cheap room in a crap pub looking for a good nights rest and an early start in the AM. Then the band starts setting up. Fucked if I know how that derelict old pub didn't fall in a heap. There must have been hundreds packed in there and nobody could move but everyone was par-ty-ing to the band. We lost half a day travel time but it was well worth it. Both the girls were very attractive and talented. The guy in the hat was a guitar GOD!!! and the drum sound was HUGE!!! Pub rock just doesn't get any better than the original "Toybox". No surprise that band had such a big following. Sorry I haven't heard any of your other bands.
Thanks for your comments guys. Its great to hear that we made an impression even if only for a short time. I believe you are referring to a gig at the Club Hotel in Armidale. They were good times. My new Toybox plays in Toowoomba often at the National. You can check it out at www.toyboxrocks.com
