Kenrokuen Garden, Kanazawa

Kenrokuen Garden and Kanazawa Castle, Ishikawa (Kaga no Kuni)
These gardens are next to Kanazawa Castle and are magnificant. Established in 1600’s by local Maeda daimyo, they are around 400 years old and beautifully maintained. The name means “garden of six features”, which are ideal for gardens. Grouped in their traditional complementary pairs, these are spaciousness & seclusion, artistry & antiquity, waterways & panoramas. Classed as one of Japans Three Most Beautiful Landscape Gardens. A wonderful blend of trees, shrubs, waterways and lanterns; it has 183 species of plants and 8750 trees. All features and lanterns are named and designed.

The famous poet Matsuo Basho wrote a poem in Kanazawa in 1689, which was carved into this rock, and is written on the sign.

Kanazawa Castle

This was the location of a temple, that was taken over by Maeda Toshiie in 1583, and from 1590 construction of the castle began. There have been 4-5 fires in different parts since then and each time it was rebuilt. The restoration continues.

Fan kanji is Baiyaku Hanga: a woodblock print of traditional medicines for sale in Toyama. Toyama is also famous for its bottled waters.
