"We are often so caught up in our destination that we forget to appreciate the journey."

This page is just a kind of summary of Guy's journey so far, particularly for newer fans; how he got famous and where he is now. It's far from comprehensive, of course, but it should suffice. ^_^.

This is a longish page... if you wanna skip to a particular section, just click a link:

Overview

Guy Now, to sum up, if you've been living under a rock, there was recently a very popular television series called Australian Idol, which was basically a large-scale singing contest (although looks, style, dancing, personality, etc, all factored into the contestants' success, as well as voice). Fans would vote for who they wanted to win; those with the least votes would be eliminated, and at the end, whoever was left would be the winner - the first Australian Idol.

22-year-old Adelaideian Guy Sebastian was that winner of Australian Idol, after a series of excellent performances every week, as well as his distinctive style (and famous afro ^_^.), ability to handle the media well, and generally nice personality. Each week his fanbase grew until it was quite huge by the end of the competition.

Since winning Australian Idol, Guy has broken records with the sale of his first single, 'Angels brought me here' and his first album, 'Just as I am'. Most of this page is concerned with his journey during the Idol competition, as he was on Idol for longer than he has been a solo artist. ^_^.

It starts...

Guy's celebrity journey started on a cold day in May 2003 at the Adelaide auditions for the new reality TV show and singing contest, Australian Idol. He was kind of sick at the time of the auditions and considered leaving a few times, but his friend encouraged him to stay, which is a good thing. ^_^. Finally he got his turn at auditioning, and sang Stevie Wonder's 'Ribbon in the Sky'. All three judges were very appreciative and unanimously agreed that Guy would be going to Sydney for the follow-up auditions.

Guy - 'culling' audition Before these initial auditions, Guy was living in Golden Grove with his family, working as a singing teacher, studying at the Elder School of Music (Adelaide Uni) and performing with the Christian youth conference/band, Planet Shakers, as well as helping lead worship at his church Paradise, playing sport, cruising around on his motorbike and writing music.

After these initial auditions, Guy went off to Sydney where he stayed for several months and became one of Australia's most famous faces (not to mention voices!).

Guy survived various 'culling' auditions where the contestants were whittled down to a final forty. The main piece he sang at this time was 'Somewhere over the rainbow', which was a hit, and a fairly unique choice. Now, instead of being one face among many, Guy would get the chance to sing to impress the Australian public.

Guy and Bek await their fate The top 40 were split into five groups of 8, and each week a group was brought out and each contestant given the chance to sing a piece of their choice to piano backing. They were also given a little video intro telling viewers a bit about who they were and what they were like. At the end of each show, the Australian public could phone in to vote for their favourite, and the top two would make it into the finals.

Guy performed 'What a wonderful world', an upbeat version of his own arranging, and the next day, he was one of the people with the top three votes. Shannon got the most votes, and then - Guy Sebastian. ^_^. And so Guy became one of the final 12 contestants, and he soon moved into the 'Idol house' with the other 11.

Finals - from 12 to 6

And so began the finals, where each week, the three contestants with the lowest votes would be identified and the two lowest scorers would be eliminated (except in 80s week where only one was eliminated). Guy didn't get into the bottom three at all, though I think in the early episodes, he wasn't paid so much attention as later, due to the number of other contestants. I don't think that, at first, it was really expected he would win; people seemed to pay Shannon, Millsy and Cosima more attention, for example. But each week he seemed to improve and he gained a definite following and fanbase.

The love you save The songs he performed during this time were:
70s - 'The love you save' (Jackson 5)
No. 1s - 'Look into my eyes' (Bryan Adams)
Australian Made - 'You're the voice' (John Farnham)
80s - 'When doves cry' (Prince)

See the performances page for summaries of each performance. 'When doves cry' was probably his turning point and one of his most famous/popular performances. It was around this point that I totally stopped worrying that Guy would ever give a disappointing performance and get kicked off. ^^.

Each week there was also a two-minute video introduction to each finalist, and each week we got to find out a little more about Guy - his interests, his job, his fashion sense, his past experience with music; more info on this kind of thing is on the info page.

AFL grand final When the finals began, so did the show 'Inside Idol' which showed snippets from the daily lives of the finalists.

Some of the things we saw Guy do was meet Kelly Clarkson and Marcia Hines' daughter, sing at the AFL grand final, visit the Ronald McDonald house for kids, practise his songs and arrangements each week (we're still waiting to hear this song he wrote about Australian Idol ^_^.), and become good friends with the other blokes in the house.

It was during this period that the first Idol single came out, featuring the song 'Rise up' (this was also performed live on a Monday night verdict show) by all twelve finalists, which Guy helped to sing. This single sold well and I think was number 1 at some stage; I know the finalists were later presented with awards for how well the music had sold...

There was also an Australian Idol Final 12 CD that must have been put together around this time. I don't remember when it came out but probably some time around the 80s special, and we got to start hearing Guy on the radio. ^_^. Each Idol got a song of their own on this album and Guy had 'What a wonderful world', which he arranged, as well as doing background vocals on a couple of other songs (see also the albums page). This sold pretty well too.

Finals - from 5 to 2

Guy and Cosima As the competition began to near the end, with five finalists left, only the bottom two were identified each week, and the lowest scorer, vote-wise, was eliminated. The number of Idol publicity stunts seemed to increase at this stage; the other main change was that each week they sang two songs. By this point in the competition, each of the five finalists had a sizeable fanbase established; Guy's just kept growing as he continued to give consistently great performances.

The first thing the top 5 did was to appear in an 'Up close and personal' special where each had a casual interview with the crowd and then performed a song of their own choice, unjudged, to the accompaniment of a strings orchestra. Guy was asked about his hair (natch), what style of music he'd put on his album (some r&b and soul - which happened!), how he felt about being recognised (liked it but found it a bit freaky ^_^.).

The songs he performed during this time were:
Up close and personal - 'When I get you alone' (Thicke)
R&B - Hidden Agenda (Craig David)
R&B - Hello (Lionel Ritchie)
Big band - Hit the Road, Jack (Ray Charles)
Big band - The way you look tonight (Sinatra)
60s - You're just too good to be true
60s - Climb Every Mountain

Guy also had his 22nd birthday on Big Band night.

Guy did get into the bottom two once, after big band night; he stayed in by a 2% margin... but he lasted the longest without getting into the bottom two. There was no chance of him getting into the bottom 2 after 60s night; after the previous week's, everyone voted vigorously; besides which, Guy's 60s performances clearly eclipsed the others', being two of his very best, especially 'Climb Every Mountain' which many consider his peak performance (haha).

Guy at Arias Some of the extra-curricular activities the finalists did at this time included going to the Arias, singing the anthem at a basketball game, various signings and publicity sessions, visiting hospitals, working out, doing photo shoots for magazines, climbing the Harbour Bridge and being photographed for the celebrity Bridge shots, and getting photographed as a rock star for Rolling Stone (Guy chose Lenny Kravitz).

When Guy reached the top three, he also recorded his version of 'Angels brought me here' (the Australian Idol winner's single) in case he won, so it would be ready to make copies of. When Guy reached the top two, he then recorded the video clip that would accompany it if he won.

Victory!

Guy exhausted With only two contestants (Guy and Shannon) left in the competition, the final push began. The guys did an unjudged performance night of three songs each - two of their own choice, as well as their version of the Idol single, 'Angels brought me here'. Guy's songs were 'I'll be there' (Jackson 5) and 'Crazy in Love' (Beyonce). Then the voting lines opened and remained open all week, which was quite ridiculous really but did leave a lot of time for them to plug the numbers and show ads and so on.

'Publicity week' started, where the two guys did a whirlwind tour around Australia on minimum sleep, appearing on TV shows, radio stations, and making public appearances in various capital cities, where they'd be interviewed and sing a couple of songs each. They appeared on Rove Live, Good Morning Australia and in newspapers and news broadcasts all over the country. You couldn't easily go a day without seeing or hearing something about the two. McDonalds gave out placemats with the guys' pictures and voting numbers; ads with the guys' performances were played on TV with the voting numbers, etc. I can't imagine what a packet Telstra would have made. ^^.

Grand Final night Finally they came back and made ready for the Australian Idol Grand Final at the Sydney Opera House. It was a big night with a huge crowd. Guy and Shannon each sang a song (Guy did 'When I get you alone') as well as singing with the other finalists, and we got to see footage of their Idol journey so far.

The results were apparently quite close and the lead had changed several times during the week (I don't know if this is true but that's what they *said*), but the final result, the winner of the first Australian Idol was... Guy Sebastian! (As if you hadn't worked that out by now. ^^.) And there was much rejoicing. ^_^.

As an artist

Guy the star After his win at Australian Idol, things started to happen pretty quickly. The next day, his new single 'Angels brought me here' came out on the radio, and it was available for sale a few days later. It was soon number 1 on the charts and broke records for single sales. It sold out totally in Adelaide and was impossible to obtain for a week or two except by order. The video clip for 'Angels' premiered on Video Hits the Saturday after his Idol win.

The day after his Idol win was full of media appearances and publicity things; after this, Guy got to work recording his first album, which he did in five and a half days, including three of his own songs, plus some he had helped arrange. The album, 'Just as I am', came out on December 8 and also broke records in the number of copies sold; it even beat Delta Goodrem's 'Predictable'.

That's a lot of success for your first month in the industry!

Guy was touring around Australia to promote the new album (like it really needed promotion ^_^.) and to sign autographs for fans and stuff, but unfortunately this tour was cut short after a fan collapsed at the Adelaide venue (it was a 40 degree day -_-.).

Now...

Guy At the time I'm writing this (December 17), Guy is in London and has just performed in the World Idol competition against a number of Idol winners from other countries around the world. Guy is tipped to be the third favourite to win, though I don't know how accurate this is. He's performing 'What a wonderful world' and we'll get to see it on December 26. Let's all not vote for Kelly Clarkson since she's tipped to be the favourite; maybe if we all vote for one of the unpopulars, we'll give Guy a better chance. ^_-.

Also in the near future, Guy will be doing a song on a Christmas Carols show, will be touring Australia with the other Idol finalists for a series of live performances, is tipped to be putting out another single in the not-too-distant future, and may be soon to break into Asia. Additionally, if I remember correctly, they're aiming to ultimately have Guy produce five albums; the next one possibly at the end of next year.
