~Performance reviews~
(after Idol)
"Imagination is intelligence having fun."
From here on in, this page will be less comprehensive; Guy goes all over the country (and world) doing various performances; it's impossible for me to see them all! But the ones I have seen, I've put up here. ^_^.

First single - Angels brought me here
Everyone I know has been commenting on how it seems this single was really written for Guy, with the lyrics and all. I guess so. Like I've said, I didn't like it at all at first but it's grown on me. Having said that, this is not a particularly good video clip, for a number of reasons like a) bit amateurish looking, b) Guy doesn't get to move much for most of it, or smile or anything, c) they've ruined his fro ^^. and d) they've got him singing the song to a girl in a chicken suit, which doesn't make any sense to us who've seen him throughout the competition. ^^.
Still, they had to do it in a hurry and had to do Shannon's as well - I'm sure the next one will be better and maybe Guy will get a lot more input into it. ^_^.
My friends reckon this would have been much better if they'd shown a) clips of Guy throughout the series like they've done on the show, and b) shown him singing it at the Grand Final. I agree - it would have been much more interesting and cool that way.

Rove Live - Angels brought me here
Shortly after winning Idol, Guy appeared on Rove Live to sing Angels. I thought he looked very nice for this performance (if you're interested, the top half of page 8 in the image gallery has several shots from this performance; he's wearing blue and white). Heheh, after he finished the performance, Rove ran on and threw confetti all over him, mimicking the Idol grand final night. ^_^.

Carols by Candlelight
Guy performed two songs for the 2003 Carols by Candlelight: 'O Little Town of Bethlehem' and 'Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas'. He was obviously the hit of the night, the act everyone was waiting for (so of course they put him on nearly last!).
I think 'O Little Town' is not a very interesting song in general - a bit too structured in tune, not much room for being funked up or sung with great heart - although all songs sound nice when Guy sings them. But 'Have Yourself' was *reaally* nice, a very sweet song. He also made everyone hold up their candles. ^_^. They were good performances, and he looked good in his suit, and was backed by a huge band.

World Idol
For World Idol, Guy sang 'What a wonderful world' - the version on his album (with the funky background music), not the one he sang on the show (with piano). I think I like the piano version better. But this was a really good performance. He looked good, he looked like he was having fun, and he was the only Idol in the contest who seemed to really be trying to entertain the crowd.
Most people seem to think Guy could have ranked better if he'd chosen a different song - and probably that's true - but Wonderful World was still a lot of fun, and a marked contrast to the other (boring) performances. ^^. He really poured all his energy into it and performed it to the max, funking it up, showing off his vocal range.
The judges were quite unanimous in liking Guy and his performance, although some didn't really care for the arrangement. I think that's a fair comment. I didn't like it when I first heard it either; it grows on you a lot, but they weren't to know that. ^_^.

Second single - All I need is you
Yay, Guy's second single was a song he wrote himself. It was one of my favourite songs from his album. I have to say, for myself, I've absolutely *thrashed* this song - played it more than any of his other songs (which is saying a *lot*), yet I *still love it* and I still dig hearing it! It's just so happy and fun, I really enjoy it.
The video clip for this single, I'm happy to say, is a *lot* better than the Angels one. This one was shot outside Sydney in an old house, like a farmhouse, where there's some big party happening and lots of people dancing and having fun. The film clip has Guy riding a bike, dancing at the party, sitting around in the fields, etc, and occasionally singing the song to a particular chick. ^_^. Guy looks good in this clip too. Guy himself said the visuals in this clip were about "celebrating the small joys in life" or something like that. ^_^.

Australia Day Concert
I think Guy was on for more of this than I saw. But I think I saw him sing 'All I need is you' and 'Angels brought me here'... my sister said he sang a couple of others earlier on but I was out this night and my family just happened to tape the two later performances.
Since we last saw him, he'd changed his style a bit - the afro was shaped differently and he hadn't shaved. He looked like more of a tough guy. ^_^. I think I like his 'normal' look better (although I think I read that this *is* more like his normal look?), although plenty of people seem to disagree with me, but he was back to normal for the Idol concert anyway.
Not much to say about the songs themselves - we know what they are by now - except that they did rearrange 'Angels' a bit, made it a bit different, such as by repeating the line 'Angels brought me here' and stuff. I'm not sure if I liked it better or not, but it was refreshing to hear something a bit different.
I think Guy was a bit tired that night. Which is quite understandable with his schedule. But he was still giving it his all, trying to give his performances his usual energy and heart. ^_^.

Idol Concert - 'All I need is you' and 'Climb every mountain'
One of the nice things about Guy is that his successes aren't one-offs. You never really find yourself worrying that he won't be able to hit certain notes, that it might be a risk. Re-singing 'Climb every mountain' is a good example. It might be thought a risky thing to redo the song everyone thought was so amazing - what if he didn't live up to it the second time? What if he didn't hit that strong last note? But you don't have to worry about things like that with him. ^_^. Fantastic as usual!
All I need is you was the same All I need is you (though I think the other Idols were singing background vocals, if I remember rightly); not much to say, really. But he always looks like he's enjoying singing 'All I need'. ^_^.

Idol Concert - 'When I get you alone' and 'Angels brought me here'
Later in the Idol concert, after singing the previous two songs, Guy came out for two more solo performances. You know, the one less good thing about Guy and Shannon having singles out is that when they perform, they have to do the singles, since that's what everyone knows best. So we heard Guy do 'Angels' and 'All I need', and Shannon do 'Drive' and 'What about me', despite having heard them at least fifty times each (hey, if I like a CD I totally thrash it ^_^.), as well as a couple of their most popular other performances... it woulda been cool to hear them do new songs, like some of the other Idols did.
*Anyway*, that said, these were still good. For 'When I get you alone', he actually wore a sleeveless shirt, which he hasn't done for a performance before. He's this big muscular guy, actually - must be all that cricket - and it gave him a kind of tough look, which suited the song. In that picture there he's doing his now-trademark 'violin gesture' which he does whenever he does this song. ^_^.
Angels was good because it actually begun with him sitting down at the piano and playing the opening himself. It sounds really good with just a gentle piano accompaniment. Halfway through he left the piano and just sang the rest, but it was very cool to see him actually playing an instrument. ^_^.
