With Raul Malo's Cuban heritage as a source of inspiration, The Mavericks' songbook includes several songs of Spanish origin. For those who wonder what on earth he is singing about and what it all means; here are some of those song lyrics in both Spanish and English.
* Note : poetic license may have been used, literally !!

Palabras (Words)
(Raul Malo)

If I could change the things of yesterday
I'd give anything to have it that way
It's impossible to recapture
Like water from the river that flows to the sea
Long nights I spent  thinking of you
Failure and mistakes made only by me
But now is not the moment to say I'm sorry
Though I'd love to give you a good reason why
(chorus)

(chorus)
Words which I wanted to say
Promises which I never kept
Lost moments which can never return

The future that I could not see
Treasure that I never found
Words I hold in silence for eternity

Words I hold in silence for eternity

Palabras, an soaring original ballad,  was first performed live by Raul live on the TNN show Prime Time Country, 15 April 1999

Bailare (El Merecumbe)
(Raul Malo)

Yo quisiera que algun dia
Que te hisieran brujeria
Para que puedas comprender
Y no me dejes de querer
Que estos dias no son felices
desde que tu me dijistes
Y con mgjo no estars
Y que no duela recordar
Bailare El Merecumbe (x 4)
I wish one day
That someone would put a spell on you
So that you could understand
and you wont stop loving me
That these arent happy days
Ever since you left me
That you'll no longer be with me
That the memory dosent hurt
I will dance the Merecumbe(x4)
De esperar estoy cansado
Quiero ya estar a tu lado
Con mi amor apasionado
Ando bien desesperado
Desesperado por quererte
Mi carino ha sido fuerte
Ha mi Dios me ha dado suerte
Pero ya no se que hacer
Bailare El Merecumbe...
I'm tired of waiting
I want to be by your side now
with my passionate love
I'm very desperate
Desperate to love you
My love has been strong
My God has given me luck
But I dont know what to do
Dance the Merecumbe

Bailare is another original song by Raul with a very  percussive arrangement, and is the first song to appear as a solo  Raul Malo effort. It can be found on the soundtrack album, The End Of Violence, from 1998

Volver, Volver
(Fernando Z Maldonado)

Este amor apasionado
anda todo alborotado por volver.
Voy camino a la locura
y aunque todo me tortura, sé querer.
Nos dejamos hace tiempo
pero me llegó el momento de perder.
Tú tenías mucha razón;
Le hago caso al corazón
Y me muero por volver
This impassioned love
goes on, compelling me to return;
I'm on the road to madness
and although everything tortures me,
I know how to love.
We parted ways some time ago
But the moment of loss arrived.
You had every reason;
I heed my heart and I'm dying to return.
(chorus)
Y volver volver volver
a tus brazos otra vez;
Llegaré hasta donde estés;
Yo sé perder, yo sé perder;
Quiero volver, volver, volver. (repeat)
(chorus)
And to return, to return, to return
To your arms again
I will arrive where you are
I know how to lose, I can take it
I want to return, return, return. (repeat)

Volver Volver is another swooning ballad and has long been a Mavericks' live favourite and appeared on the B-Side of a 7" vinyl release of All You Ever Do Is Bring Me Down in 1995

La Mucara
(traditional)

Nena quien to rompio tu mucurita de varo?
Espero que te ayude pa que me isistes llamarlo?

Mama no puedo con ella
puedo con ella
es que no puedo con ella
puedo con ella
mama no puedo con ella
puedo con ella

The water jug is on the floor Mom I can't lift it
I try to put it on my head but mom I can't lift it.
Little girl who broke your little water jug?
I hope that he helps you, why did you make me call him?

Mom I can't lift it
I can't lift it.
It's that i just can't lift it
I can't lift it
Mom I can't lift it
I can't lift it.

Oh little girl who broke your water jug?
I hope that he helps you, why did you make me call him?
Little girls if you can't lift it, why don't you call St. Peter?
I hope that he helps you, why did you make me call him?

Mom I can't lift it
I can't lift it.
It's that i just can't lift it
I can't lift it
Mom I can't lift it
I can't lift it.

La Mucara, a lively mambo of the highest order, is another Mavericks' live favourite before appearing on the European/Australian/Japanese releases of Tramploine in 1998

Rancho Grande
(Karen Molas)

Alla en la rancho grande
Alla donde vivia
Habia una ranche rita
Que alegre me decia
Que alegra me decia
Te voy hacer tus calzones
Como los usa el ranchero
Te los comienzo de lana
Te los acabo de cuero
I love to roam out yonder
Out where the Buffalo wander
Free as the Eagle flying
I'm roping and a-tying
I'm roping and a-tying.

Give me my ranch and my cattle
Far from the great city's rattle
Give me a big herd to battle
For I just love herding cattle.

  Additional verses:

Sometimes the winter storms tearing
Set all the cattle a-raring
But when the winter is over
We're sure enough in the clover

Give me the wide open spaces
That's just where I know my place is
I love the Ro-de-o dearly
And the Big Round-up yearly

Though we play seven eleven
My ranch is next door to Heaven
We smile when we take a beatin'
But hang a rat when he's cheatin'

Rancho Grande is yet another thumping and rocking Maverick's live favourite and appearse on the Canadian only release of the mini-lp, It's Now It's Live, in 1998

Guantanamera
(Lyrics: Fernandez -Orbon, music adapted by Pete Seeger)

Yo soy un hombre sincero
de donde crece la palma
Yo soy un hombre sincero
de donde crece la palma
Y antes de morirme quiero
echar mis versos de alma

Guantanamera, guajira guantanamera
Guantanamera, guajira guantanamera

I'm a sincere man from
Where the palms grow
I'm a sincere man from
Where the palms grow
And before I die I want
To give my verses from my soul

Guantanamera quajira guantanamera
Guantanamera quajira guantanamera

Mi verso es de un verde claro
y de un carmin encendido (words 2x) Mi
verso es un ciervo herido
que busca en el monte amparo

Con los pobres de la tierra quiero
yo mi suerte echar (words 2x)
El arroyo de la sierra me
complace mas que el mar

Guantanamera, guajira guantanamera
Guantanamera, guajira guantanamera

United to a white rose
In June like January
I'll cultivate a white rose

That grew like in January
For my sincere friend
That gave me his holy hand.

Guantanamera quajira guantanamera
Guantanamera quajira guantanameraua

The very familiar Guantanamera is given a superb reworking by the Mavericks and was combined with their own slice of Cuban history, From Hell To Paradise and again appears on the Canadian only release of the mini-lp, It's Now It's Live, in 1998
