A
Clockwork
Trilobite
This carving is a celebration of the natural history of
life on planet Earth.
Modelled on a Crotalocephalus sp.
trilobite fossil
(an extinct arthropod
existing around 500 million years ago in the Cambrian period), the piece
represents the transformation of life from it's humble origins of simple
organic molecules to the complex and diverse plethora of organisms that
constitute the breath-taking grandeur of life we see around us today.
The gears in the trilobite's back, revealed by weathering and erosion,
reflect the complex process of natural selection (the mechanism of
evolution), which underlies the sometimes apparent simplicity of
organisms, typified by the trilobite's body.
