Welcome to my online visual art folio, representing work I have done in photomedia and photography, assemblage and installation since the 1980s. This site covers my work to 2008, for current portfolio see: belindaallen.wordpress.com.

In working with landscape, I propose that seeking the idyllic in our environment equates to the search for a spiritual relationship to land. In the absence of a long-rooted cultural relationship with place, and in the presence of a culture whose edifices and lifestyles serve generally to alienate its residents from the ‘natural’ in their environment, we experience an intrinsic and chronic hunger for the kind of archetypal and meaningful experience of nature and place that we see expressed by indigenous cultures.

My work attempts to retrieve the scattered fragments of our (white, anglo-celtic immigrant) culture and to restablish a connection between our spiritual and actual landscape. Sources include European, English and Celtic legend and myth, the Bible and Eastern religious texts, English, Australian and European literature, and the landscape and textures of the Royal National Park in Sydney where l live.

My work over the years has explored a variety of photographic and digital media, and incorporated painting, drawing and sculptural assemblage. I have exhibited in solo and group exhibitions over many years, and for the last several years have shown most frequently at Hazelhurst Regional Gallery and Arts Centre in Gymea, where I have also initiated and coordinated group exhibitions. The most recent of these (Chiasma, May 2006) incorporated interactive works (see www.users.on.net/~designart/chiasma). My work has also been represented in the Sydney Life photographic exhibition, and the Blake Prize.
