"The Cabin Story" by
Keiko Kirin is an amusing short story in which Daniel endures one of
Jack's infamous fishing trips. Jack is defensive about the condition of
his beloved cabin and Daniel is trying hard just to make it through the
trip so he can get back to the SGC and the comforts of civilisation.
I'm usually not much
of a fan of this genre in fanfic, as I tend to find that my sense of
humour is very different from that of most fans, but I did like the
snarky dialogue between the two guys in this story and the humourous
situation they find themselves in. "What did you expect?" Jack asks
acidly when Daniel expresses his low opinion of the cabin at first
sight, "The Taj Mahal?" Daniel's deadpan "I expected electricity" made
me laugh. It's entirely in character, in my opinion: practical
yet
snarky.
I've done a lot of
thinking about why exactly I liked this story when so much of what is
designated as funny leaves me cold in fandom, and I've come to the
conclusion that it's because I don't feel as if the humour in this
story
is forced in any way. The situation is not at all original (there are
plenty of "cabin stories' in Stargate fandom) but each situation is
treated in a realistic way and there aren't any over the top dramas.
The
humour is not so much gut-wrenchingly funny as it is gently amusing and
both Jack and Daniel seemed to me to be pretty much the way they appear
in canon. I could visualise the pair of then snarking at each other so
easily that I can see this as a scene in an actual episode with no
trouble at all. The whole thing could have been fleshed out a little
more in terms of description and action but, despite the predictable
scenario, I still enjoyed this short story very much.
There's not much more
I can say about this story without giving away the plot except to say
I'd recommend it to anybody who is looking for a short, pithy dose of
their favourite guys. If you like humour, if you like short stories,
and
if you like stories that deal with Jack and Daniel (with only a tiny
dose of Sam and Teal'c at the end) then this story is for you.
Enjoy.
