As a general rule of thumb, I tend to give crossovers a wide berth - a very wide berth. There are few other universes out there that mesh well with Stargate SG-1 and, up until this point, one I'd never thought of was that of the Loony Toons. Amazingly enough, this one works for me. "Duck!" by Tiffany Parks is a quirky fic that sends Teal'c off to the universe of "Duck Dodgers", "Eager Young Space Cadet", and "Marvin the Martian" via a quantum mirror. Having grown up watching the Loony Toons and laughing at "Duck Dodgers", I found this fic a very amusing and fun story to read. Reality easily gave way to a two dimensional technicolor universe of non-fatal guns and bad puns. As I read the story, I could easily see a cartoon Teal'c struggling to interact with the sheer lunacy that is a cartoon world. Teal'c behaved as I would expect him to: expressing disbelief at his situation but able to set aside his puzzlement to deal with the matter at hand, namely getting home. It's been a while since I watched a Loony Toon but the characters act within this story just as I remember they did in the actual cartoons. More than once, I swear I could hear Marvin's uppity, nasal voice, and I could picture in my mind Duck bellowing out: "Duck Dodgers in the twenty-fourth and a half century!" Grammatically in good shape, "Duck! isn't likely to appeal to someone who wants a team episode, since the other three members of SG-1 only show up at the end of the story. But if you're a Teal'c fan, possess a quirky sense of humor, or like the Loony Toons, then this is a fic for you. |
