"Can Jack be forgiven?" is a question that is at the center of this story. Set post "Shades of Grey", "Foundations" is told from Daniel's point of view as he deals first with the conversation denying their
friendship at Jack's house, and then with  Jack's sham retirement .

I find Daniel's anger in this story very realistic and well within the bounds of the character. He speaks of, and seeks alliances with, his remaining friends in a very realistic maneuver that is true to his character and to human nature. His anger is compounded when the other shoe drops and he realizes that Jack's actions have been part of an elaborate plot.

Jack's reaction to this situation is just as believable as Daniel's anger. There is no grand apology or gesture of remorse when his deception is discovered, just a simple question to his team: "But can
you forgive [me]?"

We get to see a little of Sam and Teal'c's reactions but it would have been nice to see a little more, especially those of Teal'c, whose presence in this story is pretty much merely a token gesture .

With nice imagery and good pacing, "Foundations" is a wonderful exploration of four friends struggling through a difficult situation.   This is a story that should definitely appeal to Daniel fans, and to fans of the Jack/Daniel friendship.
