"Appassionato per l'acqua" literally means to "become passionate about water", and Lady of Asheru makes clever reference to this in her response to the Alpha Gate Challenge, "Dangerous when wet". She sets up a scenario where Daniel is ordered to attend a military training exercise that involves surviving a helicopter crash at sea. Daniel, more familiar with desert terrain, is decidedly unpassionate about the sea or swimming and uncertain of his ability to cope, despite reassurance from his teammates. This story is seen from Daniel's point of view. An emotional and physical distance exists between Daniel and Jack, the result of a drunken incident at a party some three months previously. Embarrassed by his own behaviour, Daniel accepts the situation with resignation until Jack, who used to coach swimming, offers to help him overcome his fears. It is through this collaboration that we see Jack and Daniel regain their former closeness and witness the beginnings of a romantic relationship. The pace is leisurely and serene, with little snatches of humour and fascinating snippets of information lighting the way. I found this story a real pleasure to read. The characterisation is spot on and the scenario very original. My only complaint is that it was too short - I wanted just a little more resolution between Jack and Daniel. But then again, they always say that you should keep your readers wanting more, and the author certainly does that! |
