Origins of The Family Therapy Association of South Australia
In 1981 the first National Conference of Family Therapy was held. The
Family Therapy Association of South Australia Incorporated came into
being after the conference.
Preamble to Constitution of The Family Therapy Association of South
Australia
| Whereas the Association as described is especially concerned to
ensure that every respect in this constitution is accorded to the
cultural values of Indigenous Australians, as expressed by Indigenous
Australians; and |
| Whereas the Association is mindful that historically, much pain
and suffering has been inflicted upon Indigenous Australians by
inappropriate polices which failed to have proper regard to the
views and beliefs of Indigenous Australians; and |
Whereas significant changes have now come about through key developments
in Australian Society, such as:
- the ratification by Australia of certain international instruments
including:
- the Universal Declaration of Human Rights; and
- the Covenant of Economic, Social and Cultural rights;
and
- the Covenant of Civil and Political Rights; and
- the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Racial
Discrimination
- the decision of the High Court of Australia in Mabo, Queensland
(No2)(1992) 175 CLRI and in particular the recognition and
protection by the High Court of Australia of Native title, as
determined by the laws and customs of Indigenous Australians,
- the enactment of the Native Title Act 1993 (Commonwealth)
as amended from time to time, and in particular the provision
granting Indigenous Australians the right to negotiate in matters
affecting land subject to Native Title Claims
The provisions of the Constitution of The Family therapy Associaiton
of South Australia are to be construed to reflect the Associations
commitment to the cultural values of Indigenous Australians.

Membership
Membership of The Family Therapy Association of South Australia Incorporated
is diverse. People who are eligible for membership are:
Working in helping professions or a student studying to work in a helping
profession.
- Interested in promoting the study, practice and teaching of family
therapy.
- Interested in being involved in the activities of The Family Therapy
Association of South Australia Incorporated.
- Interested in finding out more about family therapy and
justice for families.
- Membership of the association includes counselors, teachers, social
workers, medical practitioners, psychologists, psychiatrists and many
others providing support to families in a variety of settings.
