Sri Lanka is predomimantly a Precambrian crystalline basement crustal block cratonised ca. 550-450 Ma. Prior to 550 Ma, Sri Lanka comprised a number of active Proterozoic orogenic belts extending back in time to at least 2.0 Ga.
