On occasion students’ understanding of the process or processes involved in a task are assumed, left implicit or, if explained, done too briefly.

Any student looking for a shortcut will quickly work out that they can skip some or all of the process(es) unless they are made very explicit, are required and demonstrably valued, for example, by the award of marks. Simply rewarding the paper makes it easy for the plagiarist to avoid any real learning and focus on how to get the product. Allocating marks for each stage of the process, eg, research notes, developed outlines, drafts and proper referencing, will help ‘keep them honest’.
