The Tipster of The Year
In 1995, Ian 'Guru' Winnen, Brian 'L' Bevan and Paul 'PC' Caddy were involved in a serious attempt to predict the winner and winning margin of four football matches nominated by the then Totalistor Agency Board with a view to winning large sums of money. They had been at this for some time with varying levels of success ranging from success to (usually) pain, fear and misery. Stephen 'Tex' King and David 'Simmo' Simpson had been in on the deal with them but had dropped out as they needed their money for more worthwhile pursuits like buying a house or even just renting one.
The Guru then invited D J 'Hippy' Rout into the competition, pointing out, as he had done with the Notch Graph, that it was a good opportunity for a spreadsheet. The Hip immediately accepted - and the F'n Quadsters were born.

TIPSTER OF THE YEAR
The Tipster of the Year (TOTY) is determined by the number of correct tips the tipster gets during the rounds in which the TAB offers quads. In years with a split round this means there are twenty-four rounds so each F'n Quadster (a term invented by PC) gets six bites of the cherry. In years when there is no split round the odd person out has different options to fulfil their TOTY obligations.
1996 Tipster of the Year - PC with 35 correct tips (out of 92), followed by BRIAN (34), HIPPY (31), GUNGE (29)
1997 Tipster of the Year - BRIAN with 39 correct tips (out of 92), followed by GUNGE (32), PC (24), HIPPY (24)
1998 Tipster of the Year - GUNGE with 37 correct tips (out of 92), followed by BRIAN (35), HIPPY (30), PC (24)
1999 Tipster of the Year - HIPPY with 35 correct tips (out of 92), followed by PC (33), GUNGE (29), BRIAN (27)
2000 Tipster of the Year - HIPPY with 31 correct tips (out of 92), followed by PC (26), BRIAN (25), GUNGE (22)
2001 Tipster of the Year - HIPPY, GUNGE (tied with 27 correct tips out of 96), followed by BRIAN (26), PC (21)
2002 Tipster of the Year - BRIAN with 31 correct tips (out of 96), followed by PC (29), HIPPY (25), GUNGE (16)
2003 Tipster of the Year - GUNGE with 41 correct tips (out of 92), followed by PC (29), HIPPY (25), BRIAN (24)
2004 Tipster of the Year - BRIAN with 36 correct tips (out of 92), followed by GUNGE (32), PC (31), HIPPY (27)
2005 Tipster of the Year - PC, GURU, BRIAN (tied with 30 correct tips out of 92), followed by HIPPY (28)
2006 Tipster of the Year - PC, BRIAN (tied with 26 correct tips out of 92), followed by HIPPY (24), GURU (22)
2007 Tipster of the Year - BRIAN (38 out of a possible 92) followed by PC (35), GURU (30) and HIPPY (29)
2008 Tipster of the Year - BRIAN (31 out of 92), followed by GURU (30), P C (25) and HIPPY (25)
As you can see, we've actually got worse at this as the years have worn on. The Guru must've realised something because he pitched the idea on 9/2/07 that we move from our traditional 4x3 method of putting on the quad (ie, selecting three margins in each of four games) for $40.50 through whatever we could get for around $60.00 and move to what we could get for $120.00 This may prove successful. I'll let you know in approximately fifteen weeks. PC suggeted that we ignore the rounds where there is a public holiday as 'no-one can be gotten hold of'. This idea mutated into the practice, suggested by the GURU, that we abstain from backing the first four rounds u\so that we can get a cost-free idea of how the teams are faring. This idea has proven meritorious as BRIAN has used it somehow to increase his tipping ability.
Another thing that has become noticeable now that I pull all the data together is that we have had a superstitious awe about BRIAN all these years. He has won four Tipster of the Year awards (although the GURU is upset that there isn't a trophy) but I've won three of them - and in a row! PC may only have tipped a winning quad this year for the first time but he also has three Tipster of the Year awards. Indeed, so does the GURU.
WINNING PUT ON QUADS
For those interested, the winning put on quads have been:
Round 7, 2001 - Putter-Onner, BRIAN
| ESS | 37 | 60 | ESS | 46 |
| STK | 1 | 12 | ||
| HAW | 1 | 48 | HAW | 11 |
| COL | 1 | 36 | ||
| NOR | 1 | 24 | NOR | 2 |
| CAR | 25 | 48 | CAR | 40 |
Round 12A (2nd half of split round), 2001 - Putter-Onner, HIPPY
| COL | 49 | 49 | COL | 81 |
| HAW | 1 | 36 | HAW | 3 |
| RIC | 1 | 36 | RIC | 26 |
| RIC | 0 | 0 | ||
| CAR | 13 | 48 | CAR | 34 |
| POR | 13 | 24 |
Round 5, 2007 - Putter-Onner, PC
| WCE | 13 | 48 | WCE | 23 |
| CAR | 1 | 24 | BRI | 12 |
| BRI | 1 | 36 | ||
| SYD | 13 | 60 | SYD | 49 |
| FRE | 1 | 36 | FRE | 1 |
| ADE | 1 | 12 | ||
Note that the GURU has had a winning quad and BRIAN had another one, but sadly they were not recorded on the older versions of the graph. In those days I only cared about the TOTY points, not the quads.
On 31/5/09 the GURU got his second quad.
| WBD | 1 | 48 | WBD | 40 |
| SYD | 25 | 48 | ||
| NOR | 13 | 24 | BRI | 18 |
| BRI | 1 | 48 | ||
| FRE | 25 | 48 | RIC | 3 |
| RIC | 1 | 36 | ||
| GEE | 25 | 25 | GEE | 64 |
And so the quest for the ultimate quad, and in the GURU's case, a trophy, goes on. . .
