Whilst filling its honey sac with nectar, the bee is also distributing pollen from flower to flower, retaining a portion for the hive.

Nectar is modified by the hive into honey by removal of up to 80% of its moisture and addition of enzymes and trace elements. This is collected by hives as an energy source. Pollen is required by hives to provide protein for developing bee larvae.
