DALWOOD FAMILY DATABASE WARNING

Please use the family data as a guide, but you must CHECK IT FOR YOURSELF!

Some of this family information is well substantiated, but it should be used only as a starting point for your research, and NOT be assumed by it.

My database is the product of incomplete research and is not up to date. It contains assumptions which may prove to be incorrect with more research. Names, dates, places and relationships are not necessarily confirmed to the extent normally considered appropriate for genealogy and family history purposes.

Please contact me for further details if you see something of interest. I would be pleased to share information with you, but for your protection, and mine, I reserve the right to explain and qualify it.

The name

Meaning
The name Dalwood simply means 'valley wood' or 'dale in the wood'. As such it is a locative surname, referring to a kind of place, probably where the first bearers of the name lived. There are several identified variations to the spelling, many of which seem to be simply errors. For example, 'Delwood' and 'Dallwood' are occasionally encountered in modern times. Early variants such as 'Dilwode' and 'Dilwodde' may be similar variations appropriate to the period.

Pronunciation
In Australia, the name is usually pronounced with the 'Dal' rhyming with 'pal'. Occasionally, but rarely by family members, it is said with the 'Dal' rhyming with 'tall'. In Somerset, for example in Stoke sub Hamdon, it is heard with the 'Dal' sounding more like 'doll'. Many early parish register entries for Stoke sub Hamdon spell the name 'Dollwood'.

Occurrences
Although the name is moderately rare, there are nevertheless, people, places and businesses around the world carrying the Dalwood name. This is not meant to be a substitute for your own search for 'Dalwood' with an internet search engine, or two. You can do that just as readily as I can, and your results will be more up-to-date than mine. This is just a sample of Dalwood which I have found.

Places

Given it is not a very common name, a surprisingly large number of places around the world carry the Dalwood name. It seems that where-ever Dalwoods have been, they leave their name.

Dalwood village, Devon, England

The honour of the oldest and probably the original occurrence of the Dalwood name appears to belong to the village of Dalwood in Devon, England. According to G M Chapman, in Dalwood - A Short History of an East Devon Village, the first recorded reference to the village was in a Pipe Roll of 1195. It is quite possible, if not probable, that the family first took its name from this village. Chapman adds weight to this theory, reporting that, in 1350, two local witnesses at a court hearing were named Richard Dalwode. Another case in 1358, recorded in the Dorset Feet of Fines, involved John Dalewode of nearby Stockland. Unfortunately, I have yet to find other evidence.

Dalwood village is less than 29 km (18 miles), as the crow flies, from Stoke sub Hamdon in Somerset. Many Dalwood families have lived at Stoke sub Hamdon, and in parishes or villages close by, for more than four centuries. It seems likely that the name was adopted by residents of Dalwood who moved to the vicinity of Stoke sub Hamdon some time between about 1200 and the mid-1500s.

Dalwood, New South Wales, Australia

In about 1830, George and Margaret Wyndham established, near Branxton in the Hunter Valley, New South Wales, a property on which they built a homestead called Dalwood House. Judith Wright, Australian poet and author and a descendant of the Wyndhams, wrote in her book Generations of Men, that the Wyndhams named the property after a place back home in England.

The Wyndham estate website states "George purchased 'Annandale', a farm of 2,000 acres and renamed it 'Dalwood' after a portion of his father's Dinton Estate in England. Here he built his home, 'Dalwood House'". It is not clear if either refer ultimately to Dalwood village in Devon. The Wyndhams came from Wiltshire, but I have not yet found the real connection with the name Dalwood.

The Wyndhams' property is said to be Australia's first commercial vineyard and has given the name Dalwood to a range of wines. Dalwood has become an official locality, and considerable effort and money has been expended to preserve the original historical homestead building.
