G.A.P MEMORIAL RACEWAY 19TH JUNE 2004 - RACE MEETING at 5.00 PM

The halfway mark of the season was passed with the completion of round 7 at G.A.P Memorial Raceway.  Thirteen out of 18 competitors had visited the track prior to race day to test, practice and again get accustomed to the layout, and illustrating the fact that they all hoped to strengthen their claims on a better ladder position.  Unfortunately, at the end of the night some of those hopes were smashed over the guard rails and beyond!

As Tom quipped, the night was very cold but the racing was going to be hot!  And so it was, beginning with the exciting GT40’s.  Jamie posted the first and his only, perfect 16 of the night.  The first big showdown pitted Jamie, Luke, Steve and Mark against each other.  Jamie being the only one to finish the race and get 4 points, but Steve got the points for the most spectacular crash!  Travelling at full speed through the Goodyear Sweeper, he missed the Autometre bend altogether and totally launched over the barrier onto his roof.  Cameron and David came second with 14 points each, Mark 12, Luke 11 and J.P started well with 10.  A win for Tom was a good start but he had 2 DNF’s.

The highest scoring group was Ninco F1 and Mark hit back taking the group with 4 wins!  Steve and David had a dog-fight from opposite sides of the grid with their Jordans, and both scored 14 each.  Cameron followed at 13, with his Jordan, as did Michael, Luke, Michelle and Jamie with 12 points each.  Ninco F1 had the least amount of DNF’s being 13.

Scalextric Nascar was next, adding more hysteria, roll-overs and confusion to the evening with the most DNF’s (27).  Luke and David won the group in Valvoline and Interstate Batteries cars, scoring 14.  Dave led the round after this group.  Michelle came a close second with 13.  12 points for Jamie and Mark, and Dominic achieved his night’s best score of 11, Steve also got 11 and Michael scored 10.  Anthony was going ok until now, when he recorded 4 DNF’s, which really hurt his round 7 total.

Final group was Open Fly and the 10 minute break meant everyone was prepared to finish with a flurry!  The first fly showdown included Cameron, Tom, Steve and Dave.  Cameron got the first of four impressive wins in this category ahead of Dave and Tom, but Steve DNF’ed.  Cameron and Mark won the group ahead of Jamie’s 14 and David’s 13.  J.P got the fourth highest score of 11 and ran an excellent race against the track owner in the second last race.  The grand finale was a goody where Michelle, Tom, Mark and Jamie battled it out! It went to the wire with Mark winning ahead of Michelle.  Till this race, Mark and Jamie were dead equal!  Dominic showed good pace with his yellow speedster.  Tom, Michelle and Anthony all got sturdy 10’s.

Coincidentally, Tom’s group scores were: 7, 8, 9 and 10.  Joe also had good pace, snaring 2 second placing’s.  Keep cruising bro!

Jamie kept his Championship lead, but Mark whittled it away by 2.  Steve lost ground badly by only scoring 2 in Fly.  David recorded his first podium and finished second to Mark by 1 point.  Cameron had 2 DNF’s in Nascar but did well enough to come fourth and, with David, leap-frogged Luke, who was going OK until a fourth group demise and is now in sixth position.  Michelle, who came 5th, leads the rookies and is in the top 7.  Tom, Michael and Joseph round out the top 10.

Next Race meeting to be held at Hampton Court Raceway on Saturday 17th July at 4.00 pm.
