Black-headed and Freckled Monitors
(Varanus tristis tristis & V.t. orientalis)
Both sub-species of tristis range widely across Australia, with tristis tristis occurring in the southern parts of the range and orientalis in the north. Both types appear to meet in areas such as Alice Springs, where both dark-headed and light-headed forms occur together. However, the dark heads of individuals in the area are lighter than the true black-headed forms further south. This species can be very abundant in some areas but absent in other areas of apparently suitable habitat within its range.
