June Meeting AgendaDate: Wed 10 June 2003 Time: 3:30pm for a 3:45pm start Venue: Conference Room Agenda: Spatial Data in a Corporate Database
by Rod Thompson - NR&M With the major database vendors offering spatial
data types and indexing techniques, the inclusion of spatial data in
corporate databases is greatly simplified. However, the situation is not without its
difficulties. The data types offered are by different vendors quite varied,
and their behaviours even more so. In this talk, I will be discussing some of the traps
and pitfalls that arise when attempting to store and retrieve geo-spatial
data, with reference to the spatial data types offered by the major database
vendors, and how they interact. Questions and Answer Session (10 mins)
Approaches to Crosstab
Queries in Ingres Tony Shellshear - Software Design Consultants. Crosstab or Pivot Table queries involve essentially grouping the data
in a column of a table based on its value, and then using these values to
form new columns, under which the data from the other original columns in the
first table is rolled, folded, summed and generally distorted to suit some
particular objective. While tools like Access and Excel provide tools to do this, there is
no 'TRANSFORM' function in 'real' SQL. Apart from making use of Reporting Tools such as Crystal Reports, how
are users doing this with INGRES? Temporary tables? Nuclear proton reverberation
gravimetrics? .... Sucking data into Access? Networking and refreshments sponsored by Computer
Associates. Tips and Tricks
As the Tips and Tricks presentations in 2002 proved very successful we
continued with these in 2003. |

Centre, the support organisation and new procedures. Also, Diane will introduce an exciting initiative

Survey Tony Shellshear - Software Design Consultants The QIUG User Group Committee have recently sent out (attached with
this newsletter most likely!) a brief survey designed to determine what areas
could be targeted for User Presentations during the coming year. This session
will firstly present the results of this survey, and summarise the areas
indicated as being of interest, and then encourage input from the floor in
terms of comment and further suggestions as to subjects for technical
presentations. |
