Recent News From the Australian Geländewagen Owner's Association (AGOA)This is the page where you can find out the latest news from AGOA, including local, national and international snippets related to G Wagens and related vehicles.
26/11/2007 - The Largest Gathering of G-Wagens in Australia? The AGOA Treffen 2007 has just been run and a great time was had by all. With 13 vehicles in the one place we believe that this was even more G-Wagens than at the original Press Release in Australia in November 1982 and would have to be the largest gathering of registered G-Wagens in Australia. At more than 8% of the total number of G-Wagens officially sold in this country I think that it is a pretty impressive group.
5/10/2007 - The ADF Choose the G-Wagen! Great news! Daimler Chrysler has been nominated as the preferred supplier of Light Vehicles for the Australian Defence Forces. Subject to final negotiations the 280 CDI G-Wagen in both 4x4 and 6x6 will replace the ageing fleet of ADF Land Rovers. The initial order will be around 1100 vehicles and it will make sightings of G-Wagens almost common place. Whether it will flow-on into RHD Civilian vehicles is another question. Congratulations to all those at Daimler Chrysler Australia and beyond. Maybe it is time to re-read G'ocentric No.3 which had a report on the 270 CDI compliance testing vehicle. 9/4/2007 - The AGOA Treffen 2007 is on! The AGOA Treffen 2007 is scheduled for late November 2007 in the Victorian High Country. Celebrating 25 years of the G-Wagen in Australia. See the Treffen page for more details. 12/2/2007 - G'ocentric - Member Newsletter No. 3 delayed Due to computer crashes, work commitments and holidays the next Newsletter has been delayed until March, but it will be worth the wait. I have been fortunate enough to get up close and personal with a brand new evaluation 270 CDI (the 280 CDI will be the actual vehicle considered for the tender) at the Daimler Chrysler HQ in Melbourne. My full story and lots of photos will be in the next G'ocentric. Here is a taster.
4/12/2006 - Member Newsletter No. 2 On Monday, 4 December, our second AGOA Newsletter is due for publication. This month's issue will have a scoop details from a new Daimler Chrysler Australia brochure which gives details of a new G Class (and no I am not talking about the GL). I think that this is a world-wide scoop! We will also have technical articles and tips and much much more. If you are not a member you will not receive this information so sign-up now. 19/10/2006 - Our on-line forum is up and running New AGOA member Nathan Epp has been good enough to set up our own on-line forum Forum for local G Related issues. You can find the forum at: http://p068.ezboard.com/baustraliangelandewagenownersassociation Have a look, register and contribute. This has been set up just for you guys to share ideas, experience and problems. See you there! G Wagens back in Australia? With Daimler Chrysler announcing that the G Wagen will continue to be made, at least in the short term, there has been much speculation about DC Australia re-introducing the G Wagen into Australia. Press reports were quick to suggest that this may be limited to a few of the AMG versions that have already been made in right hand drive. I say a few, because the market for such an expensive vehicle must surely be limited (The word I have received is that DC Australia has scrapped thoughts of bringing the AMG into Australia purely on the pricing which would see a price tag in excess of $300,000). I note however that there have also been many factory sightings of RHD models being made and with so few RHD markets in the world it would be nice to think that at least some consideration is being given to bring the G back to Oz.. At least part of this decision may hang on Project Overlander. This is the project to look at replacing the Australian Defence Force (ADF) vehicle fleets and “Land 121” is the segment of the total project that relates to the replacement of the aging Land Rover Fleet (amongst others). It should be noted that part of Project Overlander did encompass updates to the Land Rover fleet but this was to extend their life until the replacement vehicles were selected, built and delivered. This same tendering process was the impetus for the first G Wagens to be brought to Australia in 1982/83. This time it was Project Perentie. The scuttlebutt at that time was that although the G Wagen was the preferred vehicle of the ADF, the Land Rover won the contract on the basis of price. Land 121 is due to be finalised about this time next year and it will be interesting to see what impact this decision may have on the availability of civilian vehicles. I believe that a condition of the tender is that the vehicles be at least partly made in Australia and so if the G was to be selected, it is possible that we would see CKD G Wagens being built in Australia (regional Victoria is the word). I understand that DC Australia have brought two later model G’s into Australia for evaluation (one LHD & One RHD) I am not sure of the spec. but I am told that the later models are much faster than the 290GD’s they had already brought in from the Malaysian Army. Watch this space – it could prove interesting. If you come across any interesting information why not send an Email to me via the link below. Canada recently acquired the G for its army and are currently on the front line overseas
