December 2006This month: Family Fiasco Christmas Party '06 > Ranger's Apprentice and Harbour Fog >
Friday 22 - Family Fiasco Christmas Party '06
Only 3 more sleeps 'til Christmas... for those of us counting. We had a great family fiasco on Saturday, which included the mandatory pressie frenzie, a treasure hunt for the kids, a pinata that was harder to crack than a 64-bit-key modem password, and, of course, food abounding - the definite highlights being Penny's potato salad, Karen's zuchini bake and Sandra's pear crumble pie with lashings of whipped cream! It was a lively and boistrous affair and we should do it every year!! Dad took this winning photo of Lili... Check out more photographic evidence here
Tuesday 12 - Ranger's Apprentice and Harbour FogIt's the silly season again already. I'm all house-cleaning and anticipation as we look forward to the family fiasco this Saturday when a large number of Pa's extended clan will descend upon him in a frenzied force of festivity. I'm sure it'll be an event worthy of it's own marniemoo.com album so stay tuned for that in the coming week. Looking for pressie ideas for your teenage kids... if anyone has some...? Or for yourself for that matter? Go out and buy the whole set (5 so far) of Flano's Ranger's Apprentice books. If you love LOTR (Lord of the Rings, people), then you'll love the page turning tales of Will the Ranger's Apprentice and all his friends (and enemies). I was having a coffee with friends the other day and they had their teenage son with them who was reading a thick book of the fantasy genre and I mentioned John's books... that he might like them, and he said "John Flanagan?, my friend's reading them, they're so good". "Oh, well, he's my uncle" I said casually (and completely unboastfully). "Your uncle?!, He's your uncle?!", he cried. "Sure", I said (shucks, it's nothing). And so the general conversations continued while teenage son went back to reading. But I noticed out of the corner of my eye that he kept glancing up at me, awe struck, that here in front of him was the very neice of John Flanagan. I almost offered him my autograph. Click on the image above to see a larger version of this Manly Daily article that is (hopefully) big enough to read... In other news, we had this amazing harbour fog the other day. I was dreaming about cars honking at each other and wishing they'd all stop when I realised that it was a ferry fog-horn fog-horning with what I supposed to myself was unnecessary gusto at some poor kayaker whose moment for running out of steam had just happened to be on the ferry path. I got up expecting to see some sort of spectacle on the harbour and instead was greeted by a great wall of nothing. When I say nothing, I mean, it was something... it was a giant white cloud come down to land in our back yard. Suddenly the idea of blowing a fog horn with great gusto made perfect sense. What didn't make sense was what the ferry was doing out there in the first place! I think the fog must have come suddenly and caught the ferry mid-harbour because they were cancelled thereafter for some hours. If you look carefully, you can just make out a little dinghy in the water...
Some hours later, the fog finally cleared and the ferries started up again. The water appeared to be unusually clear for some reason.
Check out Pa's new set of wheels. You should see him take this baby for a spin! He can go for 'miles' as it has a padded seat which is great for a power-rest where-ever and when-ever it's needed.
While you're here have a look at what's new on the corkboard...
