Tuesday 28 - No, it's not Hong Kong!

Bernard came to visit us the other day during his brief sojourn to Sydney (he and Tricia are travelling round Australia)... This was taken out the front here - no it's not Hong Kong...! During the Blue Mountains bush fires we got a taste of what Sydney would be like if it suffered from bad air pollution. It only lasted about 3 hours but that was a long enough time to see our beautiful view drained of all colour like a pair of faded jeans. Not pretty!!

How cute and Max-like is this pic of Penny??

Did Kate used to look a bit like Bindi Irwin??

I went sailing on the harbour with some friends the other day on 30-something foot boat called a catalina (if that means anything to anyone - it had a heads'l and mains'l and leaned horribly to port or starboard depending on the direction of the tack). It was a perfect day and a great time was had by all... well, all except one of our party who spent the day spewing and wishing earnestly she'd never been born or at least had never set foot on the boat (and there's no way on God's earth she ever will again she'll have you). But the rest of us soaked up the sun and fresh oceanic air, and learned about Sailing-Things like Motor gives way to Sail, and LOOK OUT FOR THE BOOM!! etc... I began to see what an asset dad's padded sailing hat would have been had someone failed to 'look out'. I even had a go at steering the boat which was fun in a "cripes, I'm responsible for not crashing this half million dollar vessel into anything" sort of way.

The James Craig. Don't you think this could have been taken in 1874? (apart for the fact that they didn't have cameras back then).

Some beaudiful roses that Kate gave me last week. She had a dozen to spare after one of her gigs bestowed her with pressies.

Speaking of Kate and gigs, check out her website: www.kittyflanagan.com and this flyer for upcoming gig in Newtown:

Also some new pics on the corkboard...

Wednesday 15 - Wi Marn is closing!

Last weekend we went to our favourite Thai restaurant for lunch, the Wi Marn. Apart from the cool name they do great food and it's service with a smile, especially if you are an esteemed long-standing frequentor as Pa is. To our great dismay however, they appologetically told us that we had come on their last day as they were closing and moving to Newport. NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Woe is us!!! Looks like we gotta find another favourite Thai restaurant. It just so happens that I had my camera with me and the staff were delighted to pose with Pa for a parting pic.

Have put lots of new pics on the corkboard so be sure to check it out...

Thursday 9 - Back from Hong Kong

I'm back from Hong Kong! I was going to start by saying it's so wonderful to see the blue skies of Sydney in contrast to the perpetually smog-grey colour of Hong Kong skies, but it has been threatening-to-rain-grey since I arrived, so that's something I still have to look forward to. I feel like I've been away for a few months instead of a couple of weeks, possibly because I managed to pack so much sight-seeing in to my days off. I love Hong Kong! Of course I took a million photos and have had the difficult task of choosing a handful that will give you an overall picture of my trip. I created a Hong Kong '06 album so check it out for a photographic report of my time away.

On the home front, although it seems that I slipped from Pa's mind and memory while away, it's possible that he's responding to my return in sub-conscious gladness as he's taken up having his cups of coffee again, and also his morning egg. He's also quite enthusiastic about going to the movies today and it's these small things that show the inner happiness of the Pa we know and love. Then again, it may just be that he has recovered from his recent fall and is ready to get back into the way of things as they were before. Whatever it is, it's all good.

Wed 15 November '06: Greetings from Vienna. We cant get our computer to work in the hotel so we are using a sleazy Internet cafe where all the keys are in the wrong place. Having a lovely time here and in Budapest with Heidi. Will report in full when we get back. Full chronicles available on request if you want a long read. It\'s too smelly in here, we must leave for fresher air. Love sandra and ian
Thu 16 November '06: Greetings from Budapest, I'm sure you all know that Mum and Dad have been here for ten days enjoying the spacious accommodation the French government puts at the disposal of artists. They also imported some Woy Woy culinary tricks such as cooking brown rice in the bean soup until it turns to mush. As Dad will tell you, this is no worse than the local sausages. We did all the worthy coffeehouses and tested many a worthy cake. Mum got into the Turkish baths and did them all before deciding they aggravated her arthritis. Dad got aggravated early on and opted for seeing the architectural marvels in the zoo instead. They were treated to nervous hospitality when Laszlo, my Hungarian contact, had them over for schnaps and bickies. We did a couple of day trips. The best was to a sort of Hungarian Disneyland in which peasant architecture was reconstructed region by region, complete with wells, barns and peasants icing gingerbread. It was goose killing festival the day we went. Mum decided we'd have a bag of chips for lunch. We saw a terrific ballet about a suicidal Count, which had sets and costumes imported from Covent Garden. Despite our fifth row seats, as the Count leaped around holding a skull, Mum leaned over and asked in a stage whisper, 'What's that white thing he's playing with?' Had a terrific time with them. Now they've gone to Vienna to see an opera and some performing horses. Love from, Heidi

Wed 29 November '06: Hi folks, the Kate/Bindy snaps were a worry!!! I just had my 19wk ultrasound and I'm having another girl - three in a row. Just as I started spouting on about girls running on my maternal side, the doctor point out that Dad's chromosomes pick the sex. Mazing!! Luv Karen. ps, will Kate be coming to xmas at Pa's?
