Teaching Notes :

This WebQuest can be run in a variety of ways, incorporating a variety of different resources. These notes are just a few suggestions that may be useful.

Audience

This WebQuest is aimed at advanced ESL students, but can be adapted for intermediate students. It is aimed at students undertaking the Certificates in Spoken and Written English 3 & 4 in the Adult Migrant Education Program - the competencies to which each task relates are listed below.

Strategies

  • The role of the teacher in this WebQuest is the Chairman of the Senate Working Committee. It is the Chairman's role to email the initial invitation to the students to be representatives of the different groups. It is a good idea to explain your guiding role as Chairman of the Committee.
  • This WebQuest is designed to be run over a few weeks - the time will depend on the students' level of English, and the computer resources available to you. Some time could be saved by printing the resources for the initial activities - depending on the accessibility of the internet in your institution, this could be done for some further tasks as well.
  • Make sure that the initial activity introduces general language that will be necessary for students to progress further with this unit. Brainstorming with students would be ideal for this.
  • The 'Live-to-air' debate could be recorded on video, to add authenticity and to provide valuable feedback to students. Another way of presenting this, especially when students are in a variety of sites, would be using tele-conferencing facilities, and presenting this task as a live radio broadcast. Again, chat facilities would be a good way to share research between group members at several sites, although meetings (whether in person or by telephone) should be used to promote complex speaking skills.

Technology Requirements

All students doing this quest will need basic web navigation skills. Students who are given the role of Migrants will need to have Acrobat reader, as some of the files are .pdf. Time will also have to be allowed for the downloading of audio files, as there are several worthwhile interviews to listen to - RealAudio is required for some to play.
