"Photography makes you see more. Definitely!" Dereen sees her photography as a documentary of her journey through life. "I just like taking photos. You take what you like and when you see the photo it takes you back and you remember everything."

Dereen's background is in slide photography using manual settings on her SP Nikon. This had been a gift from her husband, a very keen photographer, who thought she was taking good slides. Later he also bought her a Nikon SLR. She now shoots with a Canon Powershot S5IS Digital.

"I have no special subjects. I photograph all I see; reflections, shapes, landscapes, seascapes, nature and candid portraits. I am always looking for good light, impact and something different." Dereen admits to chasing a storm into Newcastle only to have it go the other way. She looks for opportunities to take great shots.

"Hillside Homes is one of my favourites. I just captured it, old England."

Dereen plans her shots. Because slide photography was expensive she learned to look and think about how to capture the image she wants.

Dereen enjoys the competitive side of photography. She joined Newcastle Club in 1976 and gained first place on her first night. She hasn't looked back. Through her years in the Newcastle Club 1976-1996 Dereen is the member with the most firsts in Slide, or Print of the Year. In those years more members entered slides than prints.

Apart from Belmont 16s Photography Club Dereen also belongs to South Newcastle Photographic Club where she is the member with the most 'Slide of the Year' Awards.
