NCT Critical Evaluation

Over the past 13 weeks or so, that I have been studying New Comm Tech, I’ve heard about lots of different theories, facts and stuff about communication on computers and other technologies in general. Most of the information I have found useful to some degree, but most of the time, I found the information to be very simple, and not very full on, and explanatory. I feel that this course is defiantly a very broad kind of course, and was probably suited towards people who have had no prior interest in NCT previously.

What I feel that worked well in this course is watching movies as part of the course, to better paint pictures of the meanings and things that we were learning about in the normal content of the course. I found it especially good when the lecturer was able to relate what they were speaking about to a real world scenario, to better describe what they were actually talking about, as opposed to hypothesizing what something could be used for if it were in fact, being used.

The most enjoyable part of the subject would have to be the tutorial tasks, I found the tutes to be very well planned out, and the content in them was a good addition to the lecture, in helping me understand themes from in the lecture.

In the entire course, I really only didn’t like one thing in it/didn’t enjoy. And that would have to be listening to Steven Stockwell talk. I found his method of delivering the lecture material to be very bland, and at times it would seem like he didn’t know what he was talking about. The excessive use of uhm’s, ah’s and pauses in his speech, made it very hard for me to make logic out of anything he said, as such I found it very hard to pay attention, and to keep up motivation to stay awake etc.

I didn’t develop any \new/ skills as such, in this course, how ever it gave me the opportunity to revisit skills I had learnt years ago. I have always felt comfortable with NCTs.

I feel that no change is nessicary in this course, as everything is already pretty damn good as it is, content wise. It suites first year students very much (as I’m obviously one myself) and it makes uni feel as thou it’s going to be an easy atmosphere to slip into, study wise. This has not felt like the case with other subjects, so it’s good in that manner.

I rate this subject 7/10

NCT WEEK 12

This weeks lecture was about Dystopia and Utopia's, and the various types of things that have been written in the past few decades, like aldous huxleys brave new world and the like. Basically thou this lecture covered the meaning of Utopia and Dystopia and gave many examples. From my understanding Utopia is something that doesn't exist, a perfection that cannot be created, and ultimate world. Dystopia is the opposite in a way, more of something that is so bad? that it cannot happen.

NCT Week 11

The Lecture
This weeks lecture was about previous forms of computing/communication from era's as far back as the caveman days. Also talk about greek gods and what not, talking about humans and their contribution to our technolgies now. Also discussed was a tremendous amount of ethics that should be present in today's society, but in someways are not. Also a bit of wisdom on writing, and interesting stories, and the people who are most likely to have more interesting stories to tell/who have a good concept of reality and the earth.

The Tutorial
In Microsoft Excel today, we had to make a document, and learn basic functions like hiding, and unhiding of rows, making graphs, formulas, and adding borders to cells. All of the things that it said we had to do, I already knew how to do, except for the macro button’s thing, but I had completed tasks similar to it before. I found the instructions in the course reader to be somewhat vague, and hence found them hard to follow. So to figure out the macro buttons I had to find a round about way of making it happen, using prior knowledge of making new menu buttons, and by clicking on many things till I found what I was looking for. Also I find that macros are generally an ineffective way of getting around excel, and in my opinion, 9 times out of 10, there will be a better way to do something other then using macros. All of the things in this exercise that we were asked to do, I knew were possible in a way, but I personally had never thought about using my knowledge in the ways portrayed in the reader. Benefits of having this skills would have to be for people who plan on working in fields that require lots of use of Microsoft excel, i.e. data entry. Other benefits would be for people who need to do up graphs and things a fair bit, this would make that process a hell of a lot easier. Likewise people who feel the need to keep a personal budget would also find these skills useful. However, from my previous experience of Microsoft Excel in high school, I feel that the task in the reader could have been a bit more complicated and challenging, as in high school, a highish kind of level of excel skill is taught… In grade 8. In case you actually do read these blog entry’s at all, it’s probably a worthwhile note, that if you haven’t noticed by now, the last 50-100 words or so have infact had little to do with the task at hand, and are more or less just making up words. However if in fact you don’t read this blog entry’s then that’s just good for me.

NCT Week 10

The Lecture
The weeks lecture was about cybertherapy, and how people are more likely to part with their problems whilst speaking with psyhchologists on the internet, as opposed to over the phone. And the benefits, and disadvantages of such things... Then a whole sub thing about life line and all that crap, and a program that they use...

The Tutorial
Chatrooms are the next great thing to grace life.. maybe, for the tutorial we had to evaluate 2 kinds of chatrooms: A classic text based chatroom, and a virtual enviroment that seems more like a game then a chatroom. Each have their own advantages and disadvantages, the virtual enviroment chatroom (VEC) is more entertainment orrientated, and contains more to do then just chat to people. You can run around different worlds and things, and as I found, there is even a bit of eye candy to look at for some reason too..

NCT Academic ESSAY!!! Simulcasting via Blog

Geek is the future?

In an era of always-on internet, personal computers, mobile phones, and instant messaging – not to mention the still prevailing drugs sex and rock ‘n’ roll – society has become very distant from its former roots. People are finding themselves more and more reliant on new technologies, like the mobile phone, to communicate with one another and hold conversations that should and traditionally would have been held face to face. This may seem all well and good for most people, however people are blind, and they don’t know what is good for them. So they just use the technology. Obviously this concept doesn’t factor in everybody, and there will be exceptions to this hypothesis, so to make understanding easier, we’ll just forget about these exceptions
Modern day society as we know now still has ingredients from the early 1900’s. Everything we know and use today somehow originated from an idea that somebody had back then. Electricity had just been thought of, the motor car became widespread, medical break throughs were happening on a regular basis and many other life changing events were occurring. But life back then was simple, people did things for other people, everybody knew each everybody else, it was very much a ‘community’.
21st Century life is much different, almost everybody keeps to them selves whilst in public, with the occasional “How’s it goin’?” or “G’day” to kill the silence during those awkward moments between individuals, and the traditional acts of chivalry that rarely occurs, even rarer, a full blown conversation with complete strangers.
With society tending towards introversion, one would begin to wonder, how are people filling this void, where are the people socializing?
Some of people, will probably go home, talk to their families about their day, catch up on the day’s news, and then sit down, check their emails… check the thread they posted that morning on a forum, read all the comments people made about what they had to say then proceed to reply to those comments. Then they will engage in an online conversation with somebody whom they probably know in ‘real’ life (like a girlfriend, best friend, class mates, etc…), but unlike their face to face conversation – the topic most likely be of something much different, deeper, even more intimate. The things that they say usually aren’t a fair reflection on how they are face to face, either for the better or the worse, but nevertheless a difference is had in the two types of communication.
This behavior doesn’t limit itself to this scenario either, but it can expand to many other types of text based communication. This behavior has even been the subject of many psychological research experiments, and has been dubbed “The Online Disinhibition Effect” (Suler, 2005).
The Online Disinhibition Effect is well known among society, but they probably just haven’t put a name to it. The Online Disinhibition Effect is specifically, according to Dr Suler, the act of when people say and do things in cyberspace that they wouldn’t ordinarily say or do in the face to face world. This is due to the fact people become more uninhibited online, and express themselves more freely.
This affects almost everybody who use’s the internet, and text messages alike, whether almost everybody wants to admit it or not. Every day people tell their loved ones that “they love them”, or they tell others news that in any other circumstance would be hard to tell (eg. Breakups). Similarly people whom are normally extremely introverted (read geeks) benefit from this greatly, as they develop vastly elaborate online personalities in online communities where it does not really matter how you behave in real life, but more on your mind, the way you think, your relative intelligence, and your ability to act as a intellectual model for people who may not be as smart – completely ajar from how most of everyday society works where it is much the opposite in that it matters more about how you present yourself as a person and other various traits that we have in society (generally in society, first judgment is made on looks, not personality). This is not to say judgment isn’t made on personality however, as stated in Social Psychology (Bordens & Horowitz, p125, 2002) This means that in limited cases the Online Disinhibition Effect (ODE), can infact help people ‘if’ they have low self esteem from extreme lack of friends and so forth.
However as Dr Suler states, “if people prefer to communicate via wires and circuits, there must be something wrong with them”.(Suler, 2004) Ángel J. Gordo-López also agree’s with this statement to a degree (Lopéz, 64, 1999). This statement is very debatable in my view, because who is to say the people ‘prefer’ to be communicating via the wires and circuits, where it may well be more of a case that it’s just much easier to communicate via the wires and circuits.
Another thing that needs to be factored in, is whether the ODE is removing aspects of face to face communication from distribution, but merely, adding a dimension of communication that was never there in the first place.
The ODE has a lot of different operational aspects to why it is so too. Anonymity, gives the user the ability to interact with people, without them ever knowing who you are; this makes it easy for people to say things about topics. Asynchronicity of communication, as it isn’t in real time, users are given time to think about what they are about to say (re-read, edit, read again, erase, publish) much like an Essay, which is essentially what online communication is, an Essay.
One thing that I commonly experience with respect to the ODE is that, I’m generally a lot more extroverted online, and tend to tell people a lot more things then normal, thus originated comments from others like “I feel like I could tell you anything when I talk to you on here” and other words rearranged much to the same effect. Experience’s such as this could bring one to do a little self discovery, and question who they truly are, with people seeming so different online who’s to know what’s real. This is infact a common thing too, people using the internet as a self discovery tool it says so right here in The Internet and the Society, by James Slevin (p174, 2000).
The bad thing about this is for people who try to use the internet as a social pick up point for meeting new people. People seem so great online, they portray themselves as the nicest person in the world, and when they arrange to meet in the ‘real’ world and it appears that all the features that were expected, were in fact non existent disappointment is but the natural reaction. So the problem arises of False Portrayal of Character. This isn’t a problem uniquely involved with an online environment, but it’s far more common, and much easier to do online. As such, it could be easy to give somebody your much loved trust, and let go of information that really shouldn’t have been let go of – All just part of the ODE. In an extreme case, this could actually work out and become good, if both (if not more) parties were to all falsely portray themselves, and when/if a meeting was arranged out of cyberspace, and it turned out they all lied, it probably wouldn’t be so bad.
The most wide spread and common of the ‘online’ communication technologies would defiantly have to be SMS (Short Message Service). With the greater half of the population in possession of mobile phones, everybody has access to it, which makes it a very easy way to communicate effectively, and it has the same anonymity as other cyber communications. This effectively adds the final dimension to communication “deep thoughts”. Deep thoughts are the thoughts that people always think, but never say. Due to the ODE people part with these thoughts, and let others know how they feel, but generally only ever via an SMS (or any other form mentioned here) Christine Hine reinforces my view on this in her book Virtual Enthnography (p50, 2000). This is almost like letting people invade your mind, leaving yourself as an open book and letting people read your inner workings. Which can either be good or bad depending on the reader.
Myself, I much prefer face to face communication, as it can be much more expressive then text, as sometimes text just isn’t enough to convey a feeling; it’s very easy to run out of the right words to use, and unless what your writing about is well thought out, it can also be read incorrectly, and be interpreted the wrong way, this is especially the way with text messages, and the lingo where there is acronyms for everything but not everybody knows them. In face to face communication questions can be asked and answered while the general feeling is still the same, a topic can be spoken about without being side tracked too much, and without being shortened. For example, this Essay would have been much better spoken. Speaking is natural.

NCT Week 9

The Lecture
In this week's lecture a discussion about Cyber Democracy was had. In the discussion ideas of democracy not being a real democracy, and media controlled democracies were brought up. Gaps in the mass media were also talked about, where there is a very biased media view, which puts forward an idea into citizens heads, and try’s to influence their decisions. Hacker’s and hacking we’re spoken about again. But all together, this lecture was so boring I never really payed any attention what so ever…

The Tutorial
PowerPoint is just about the easiest of the easiest Microsoft program to use. Not only is it simple, it doesn’t have all that many features for you not to know how to use. In doing the exercise I encountered no problems, and found the task really easy. All in, it took me about 10 minutes to complete the task, which is nothing really. However, one thing I did learn from the exercise thou, is that Microsoft PowerPoint is not a word processing program and as such, should not be used to write essays or other written assignments!

NCT Week 8

The Lecture
This week’s lecture was all about Computer games in a new age. Different types of games were covered in the lecture, such as MMOG's, Console's and Arcade games. It is notable that the people who play such games are different too, for example... Younger people tend to play the console games, with more of the audience tending towards Computer based games.I also now know that, the game industry is a bigger industry then the movie industry. and as such is being treated so, with advertisements being brought into games, and complex story lines also making an appearance.

The Tutorial
Microsoft Word is one of the most common programs that anybody uses, and today's exercise was to learn some of the basic features of word like saving typing etc, as well as the "advanced features" of mail merge, and tracking changes. The exercise we completed were, in my opinion pretty easy, but none the less I’m sure they were enlightening for some people. Most of the stuff in the exercises is taught even from the early years of high school, so, me being fresh from high school, already knew about all of the features mentioned in the reader outline. The most challenging exercise thou, was the mail merge exercise, as I have never really used it in this version of word, so everything was in the wrong places, and the new wizard certainly made things a bit more difficult but not so difficult as for me to be able to re learn the new interface. (Posted with this is a copy of the mail merge that i had to do, so anybody can look at it, laugh.. what ever it is you want to do.)
One feature of word that I have never used thou, is the macro function. So… I will now see what it does using the Microsoft help file. And it seems that what a macro does is, for when you have to perform a task over and over again, all it does is makes the repetition automated, so you just sit and watch. This is good for say… changing fonts in mass succession, or printing lots of things. Macro’s would be very handy to some people, but probably not to a uni student. To use this feature, you need to be apt minded in visual basic language, so you can program the scripts. Myself I’m not very apt minded in VB so I still have no idea how to use the macro’s. But I have now discussed a function of word that I have never used before.

NCT Week 7

The Lecture
Today's lecture was about different emerging technology's in today’s society such as mobile phones, internet personalities, search engines, interactive TV, hologram techs, teleconferencing, and teleprecencing. Most of this stuff is pretty explanatory really.

New technology with mobile phones, isn't really that new a vast percentage of the population own mobile phones, and a percentage of those mobile phone are now 3g phones (which i personally use). And people just spoke about the up's and down's of mobile phones - nothing ball grabbing really...

And search engines, that weren't the typical "Google" search engine but more so search engines that are always searching the internet for information that may interest you, and when it finds it, it delivers it to you either by email, or by sms or something... basically just like any subscribed news service...

Avatars we're also discussed, but I knew what avatars were prior to entering the theatre, as I am a regular forum attendee, and i frequent many forums. So, this kinda thing was right down my alley, and i didn't really got told anything i didn't know here.

Interactive TV, is basically here now - think foxtel digital, that's boring stuff i didn't really listen to interactive TV to be honest...

Holograms are cool, several different hologram technology's where brought up, but the biggest notable one was the reflective laser one, where laser beams reflect off each other and using some super computer algorithms, 3d holograms are created, using different frequency's of light, and calculation of refracted rays to shoot lasers off into different directions, to make an image.

Video conferencing is old hat too, but different corporations where brought up with respect to, the creating and widespread use of video conferencing... But most mobile phones support that nowadays...

And time travel - a majority of the lecture was spent on philosophizing about the possibility of time travel, and several examples from sci-fi movies were brought in, and the feasibility of the ideas discussed. With many of the ideas thrown out the window, I see the most feasible idea of time travel, is a worm hole, thru a fold in space time... but that’s' just me

The Tutorial
David Cronenberg’s film “eXistenz”, toys with the concepts of computers, and virtual reality, like many a film to succeed it. It reinforces the idea of a type of Virtual reality, that uses a “gamepod” as it’s interface. The game pod is made of living tissue, and is attached to the human using an umbilical like cord – inserted into the base of the spine. The movie takes a typical course of events, starting off in a game conference to trial a new game (eXistenz), but while trialing the game a problem is encountered with one of the lookers on, and try’s to execute the game designer “Allegra Geller”. Typically, the execution is a failed attempt, and Allegra, and her guard proceed on a journey to a safer place, trying to stay undetected, but they encounter many a risk on the journey.
In most cases the movie is unsurprising, none-the-less suspense is still created, and you are left on the edge of your seat in awe at what’s going to take place next. In any case, the idea behind this movie is very common these days, meaning most of the concepts portrayed in this movie, are not new. At the time this movie was made, computer systems and hacking seemed to be a good idea, as eXistenz was realised about the same time as ‘The Matrix’. Both movies use similar kind of VR concepts. The major downside of this movie is it’s dismal ending… So if your really interested in the sci-fi computery flicks, then this is for you.

Here you can see the same review, one review in Normal as it’s gonna get English, and the other in Text Lanuage (courtesy of http://www.transl8it.com/)
Obviously the better of the two for all things other then size, is the general English version. Much is lost in the translation, and most people need to have a degree (or their own translator like transl8it) to read it. Interestingly enough the translater only took off just under 200 charactors, and added 1 word (which is strange?) The downside of the text style is relative illegibility, and most of the long words weren’t shortened anyway/can’t be.

Over all things, the worst thing about text language is the mindset one would have to actually use it, and readers of such things would be judging you just for manipulating the English language in such a harsh way
