Lorraine Lewitzka

Lorraine Lewitzka
Lorraine Lewitzka Born: South Australia 1952

---------

Lorraine Lewitzka was born in 1952 and spent her adult life in the commercial art field as a fashion and illustrative artist in black and white, after a childhood of constant observation, drawing and painting, influenced by other artists in the family.

In 1986, with encouragement from her husband Terry, Lorraine explored the medium of water-colour with tutors Majorie Hann and Rupert Richardson of N.S.W. In 1988 she was accepted as Fellow of the Royal Australian Society of Arts and exhibited in a few private and mixed exhibitions.

A significant turning point for Lorraine’s art education came in 1990 when she won the Thomas Laird Memorial Art Award at the Victor Harbor Rotary Art Show. As a result of this, she was tutored by four distinguished watercolourist in the U.S.A. and continued her study at the Slade School of Art, London discovering the new medium of oils in life painting.

Since returning, Lorraine was guest artist at the 1991 Victor Harbor Rotary Art Show and in August of the same year, participated in her first two man exhibition at the Barry Newton Gallery, Unley Road. Lorraine has also participated in exhibitions at Studio Z, Burnside; John Dunn Gallery, Bridgwater; The Barn, McLaren Vale, and submitted a watercolour self-portrait to the National Doug Moran and Portia Geach Portrait Competitions. Over the year, Lorraine has always endeavoured to produce work of substance, giving the viewer opportunity to grow with and into the painting.

With good draughtsmanship the goal, the line, mainly through contour drawing gives the work a solid base, expressed further by the effects and different play of light coupled with chasing of mood and atmosphere. Much preparation goes into her final pieces of art.

Lorraine, at present, concentrates on traditional and contemporary still life, figurative subjects, and landscapes, oil interiors and commissioned portraits. Lorraine teaches drawing and watercolour at the Telegraph Station Art Studio in Victor Harbor where she lives and works alongside her husband Terry.
