Success at last for Burnley Backyard funding! This means that work on the site can begin and we can look forward to the Burnley Backyard being fully operational by the end of 2014. When finished, the Burnley Backyard will incorporate leased garden plots, kitchen garden, chook pen, kitchen, an arts and crafts studio, a workroom, flexible room for meetings, programs and activities and a small office. There will be a children’s play area and a paved outdoor area with an arbour. We are planning to hold a public meeting in AUGUST at which detailed plans will be presented (these have been altered to reflect budget delays and changes) as well as information about programs and activities. This public meeting will be advertised on the fence of 49 Tudor Street, via the Leader Newspaper, via leaflet drop, on the Burnley Backyard Facebook page and via the Richmond Community Learning Centre website and Facebook page. Thanks to everyone who liked and shared our Facebook page, signed our petition and attached yellow items to the fence. Thanks to the community members who originally saved the Tudor Street site from being sold off and to the volunteers who are continuing to advance the project. Thanks to our Melba ward councillors: Cr Misha Coleman, Cr Phillip Vlahogiannis, Cr Simon Huggins for their assistance. Would you like to be a part of this exciting project?
We are very pleased to announce that on Tuesday the 4th of June, the City of Yarra council passed the 2013/2014 budget which included $200,000 for the Burnley Backyard!
Your skills, time, enthusiasm or expertise are just what we’re looking for!

Burnley Backyard Update 49 Tudor Street, Burnley First of all, we would just like to thank you for your support and participation in the Burnley Backyard community project at 49 Tudor Street, Richmond. Now we would like to update you on the progression of the project as it enters the final stages of planning. It has been an intense few months for the committee at Richmond Community Learning Centre (RCLC) as we entered Stage 3 of the Burnley Backyard project. We enlisted the services of Mat Foley of Content Studio just before Christmas to lead the architectural side of this stage. Mat has a lot of experience working on community projects, having designed kindergartens, resource centres and discovery centres throughout Australia. To see some of the amazing concepts his company have worked on you can go to www.contentstudio.com.au/#Case-Studies. Additional detailed work was done during the holiday period to finalise plans for the site, meeting with the architects, council and other relevant stakeholders. We are extremely confident with how the plans have turned out and will have some of the architect’s depictions in the News & Events section of our website in the coming weeks (refer below to view one of the plans). We will also have a display on the perimeter fencing of Tudor Street. We have continued to be informed by the community consultation and the ideas and aspirations that were presented during Stage 2. Also as part of Stage 3 of the planning process, a program of project completion, which outlines the timeline for certain phases to be completed, was generated. We estimate that once the project gains council’s budget approval, is costed, documented and tendered, the first phase of construction will commence in January 2014. The first phase of construction will focus on the major building works, allowing the community gardens section of Burnley Backyard to be handed over to the Richmond Community Garden Group to begin operation. All going to plan this will happen in April 2014. As this takes place, the second phase of the construction process will take place which will include the internal fit outs of the meeting spaces and landscaping of the outdoor areas. The expectation is for Burnley Backyard to be fully operational and open to the community by the middle of August 2014. More recently, committee members and staff have met with the three newly-elected councillors for Melba Ward. Misha Coleman, Simon Huggins and Phillip Vlahogiannis all were very supportive of the project and have contributed suggestions based on their local knowledge. While the councillors are supportive, council itself is still yet to sign off on the project or the $865,000 funding required for the build to commence. There has been a strong indication that approximately $800,000 is available for the project. Thus, we are now looking for full approval for both the funding and the delivery timeline of the project as soon as possible. To do this, RCLC committee members will be attending the next council meeting to be held on the 9th April at 6:30pm at Richmond Town Hall. We will be asking for formal commitment to the project and we encourage you to show your support for Burnley Backyard by joining us at the meeting. If you are unable to attend the meeting but wish to pose a question to council we can ask it on your behalf. Thanks again for your support and if you have any questions for us regarding the project please do not hesitate to contact us. On behalf of the Committee of Management and staff of Richmond Community Learning Centre

I spy with my little eye… It’s ALL of the above! From all of us at RCLC, have a wonderful Christmas with your family and friends. Thank you for being an important part of our centre. Keep safe and we look forward to seeing you in 2013.
…something beginning with ‘C’. Is it community? Is it children? Is it classes? Is it Christmas?

Ringing in the ears… We need all our parents/carers to download our Christmas songs which have been prepared by one of our lovely Childcare Coordinators, Diane. Get your children ready to ring their red Christmas bells and sing their little reindeer tails off this coming party night! (Psst, Santa’s dropping in this year again too. Ho, ho, ho!)
RCLC’s Christmas party will hit its stride on Friday 14 December and the Christmas bells and carols will be ringing in our ears once again this year.

Thanks and the winners are… The Art & Craft Competition Prize winners are being announced today with the Door Prize winner to be announced next week. Check out our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/rclcnews for names of competition winners and pictures taken at the event. Thanks to our event organisers, volunteers, stallholders, staff and the many mums, dads, grandparents, friends, cousins, and organisations who helped spread the word about the festival. All of us were winners of that much-needed community spirit on the day.
What a fantastic day the Green Family Life Festival was last Sunday. Thanks so much to all of you who came and made the event such a fun community day. The majority of visitors were from the local 3121 zone (Richmond, Cremorne and Burnley). We were thrilled to be able to welcome everyone from the length and breadth of Melbourne from Hawthorn to Point Cook. Can being green really be fun then? YES!

The lull before the storm We’ve been winded, rained on, cooled down and then warmed up. The sun is shining as we write this and the Melbourne weather forecast is looking very promising for Sunday’s festival. See you then!
Two days to go until the Green Family Life Festival starts at 10:00am this Sunday and we are expecting many families to storm through our centre eager to discover what green ideas, products and fun activities we have for them and their children. Great food and drink to buy and lots of prizes to win too. First one is the door prize so make sure you fill out the entry form as you come through our gates.

With such a variety of stalls and activities for the family at our upcoming Green Family Life Festival, what more can you and I possibly ask for? We’re looking for people who can offer their time and talents for up to 2.5 hours on the day (Sunday 09 September) in a variety of tasks at our centre:

Turn trash into treasure
We need recycled art & craft materials for our Green Family Life Festival being held on Sunday 09 September. We’re looking for materials that would otherwise get recycled or go to landfill. Can you help by collecting and donating any of the stuff on our list of items? Drop them into our foyer. Thanks

Blocks of Richmond up for grabs Well, if you’ve been looking for an excuse to exercise (and/or check out the amazing array of lanes and homes in Richmond), contact us to stake your claim on a map of a block of Richmond (or even a little bit of Hawthorn) within which you will do a letterbox drop of our event flyers. Thanks so much to those enthusiastic mums who have already dropped by to pick up flyers – they will be strolling and pramming through their local streets soon. Still, we need many more helpers so get in touch.
As we count down the weeks (yikes, only a little over four now!) until our Green Family Life Festival kicks into action on Sunday 09 September, it’s time to get out onto the streets of our neighbourhood and let the locals know about this fantastic day. So hang on, where are the blocks of Richmond up for grabs then?
