Numerology, as the name suggests is the art of divination by numbers.
It uses both your birthdate and the conversion of the letters in your name to numerals.

There are a couple of different ways to work out the distilled number or "Life Path". There are 11 numbers used in numerology 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11 and 22. By adding together the numbers in your birthday
eg. 23 July 1963 - 2+3+7+1+9+6+3 = 31.
We then add the larger numbers together until we reach a single digit or one or the 2 master numbers (11 or 22). So anyone born one the above day will have a life path of 4. The other method is adding down colums eg.

Which is then distilled down to 1+9+9+3 = 22

So How do we then work out the number/letter correlation. Using the below table should give you a good idea and again we add the numbers.
