2004 - 2008 Updates

2009

18 April:  Some time ago The Doc mentioned tests being conducted on three long life batteries. Unfortunately the Doc would not get consistent test results. Accordingly, no results will be posted. Because the exact reason is unknown, it is best not to mention brands.

29 March:  It is always a good idea to have a look at the tips from time to time.

13 February: Sorry about the lack of updates, but I have a bit of an accident that landed me in hospital.  Things are slowly returning to normal and updates will start in a few weeks.

2008

17 December: Rechargeable batteries make great Christmas present to run all the new toys. Visit The Battery Wizard and pick up a bargain.

16 December: Looks like the Doc is not the only one impressed by  UNiROSS 2700 batteries. View here.

30 November: I have given my comments concerning battery performance, now I will briefly comment on chargers. What charger does The Doc use frequently? For Ni-MH batteries, the enecharger smart charger, the Ansmann Deluxe Precision “Energy 8” (used for Ni-Cd as well) and the Maha Powerex C808M . I use the La Crosse BC-900 to refresh batteries, but The Doc do not like the Maha Powerex MH-C9000 very much. The Maha Powerex MH-C9000 is a powerful charger, but you must configure the charger every time you use it, for The Doc there are easy and cheaper options. It is overrated in my opinion, there are better choices in the Maha range. For versatility, no charger beats the Rezap, but it is beginning to show its age, lucky the Rezap Pro is on the way (The Doc has been testing it for some weeks now).

25 November: Looking for a capable 4 cell charger for AA and AA batteries? Try this new enecharger fast charger from The Battery Wizard. It comes with 4 Sanyo AA 2700 mAh batteries for only $59.95 (plus postage). It would make a great Christmas present to run those new toys!

22 November: Some long term observations about battery performance. AAs: Sanyo, Powerex and UNiROSS batteries continue to work well. AAAs: Duracell (actually Sanyos) and UNiROSS are also working well. Many of the Chinese brand AAA’s are poor performers, even worst than most Chinese made AAs (UNiROSS being the exception). C & Ds: The high capacity C and Ds Ni MH are excellent performers. The C and Ds will soon face competition from Sanyo eneloops, yes eneloop will come in C and D size.

16 November: The Battery Wizard has added a Sanyo eneloop battery kit just in time for Christmas. Great for family use. Take a look.

28 October: If you have been holding back buying batteries or chargers, The Doc suggests you buy in the next 2 weeks. With the plunging Australian dollar, I believe a price rise is unavoidable, once current stocks are sold. So visit The Battery Wizard.

11 August: The Doc is testing 3 sets of long life Ni-MH batteries. As usual, nothing is going smoothly. One set has been tested but the results are well below expected. So perhaps a retest is in order. The other 2 sets do not seem to what to take a charge. Back to the drawing board to try again with them also!

18 July: Now some price cuts on AAA batteries over at The Battery Wizard.

17 July: What a difference a week makes. The UNiROSS distributor has changed ownership and the new owners will not be putting up the wholesale price by 30%!! That is good news.

15 July: Some price cuts over at The Battery Wizard on AA batteries.

14 July: Finally updated the Best Buys page.

13 July: The Doc is testing Kodak long life Ni-MH batteries (AA only). He also has  some other long life brands on order. So finally there is some movement in the market.

12 July: The Doc has it on good authority that the wholesale price of the Hybrio batteries is increasing significantly, over 30%. So the Sanyo eneloop now offer better value.

7 June: Not much to report in the battery sphere lately, very quite.

27 April: There are some more long life Ni-MH batteries on the market here in Australia, including Sony's CycleEnergy, Duracell Rechargebale and Varta Ready2Use. The Sony and Duracell are rebadged Sanyo eneloops. The Varta I tested, but one of the cells leaked. The Varta are made in China and the quality is not very good. Stick with Sanyo eneloops or UNiROSS Hybrio.

14 April: People have been asking what charger is suitable to use with Sanyo eneloops and UNiROSS Hybrios batteries. The Doc has been testing the enecharger for a few months.  It is cheap ($48.50 plus postage), highly flexible (can be used in home or car) and is ideal for family use.  It delivers a good combination between speed of charging and battery life.  The Doc really likes using the charger. It will become a best buy when I have time to update the list. Buy a few battery cartridges and you also have C & D batteries for use around the home.

10 March: Some more price cuts over at The Battery Wizard, this time for bulk packs of Sanyo eneloop. These cuts mean the eneloop are probably better value than the Hyrbio.

9 March: The price of one of The Doc's favourite chargers, the Camplus Intercept, has been slashed over at The Battery Wizard.

4 February: Since my last update, at least 2 new long life batteries are on the market. First, Varta has the Ready2Go range. Secondly, Duracell has a version which look only marginally different from there other rechargeable batteries. I believe these Duracell’s are just rebadged Sanyo eneloops.

7 February: Tidying up some pages.

2007

18 August: Not sure about good charging technique? Take a 2 minute refresher.

18 July: Individual cell capacities for Varta 800 (AAA) posted.

16 July: Individual cell capacities for UNiROSS 900 (AAA) posted.

15 July: Individual cell capacities for Sanyo 1000 (AAA) posted.

9 July: The Doc has been away overseas on business. More posts soon.

12 June: There is a great special over at OLIVE by Langlois. OLIVE by LANGLOIS skincare products are made from extra virgin olive oil. Try their range of effective, safe and natural olive based, skincare products.

5 June: Great special on bulk orders at The Battery Wizard for June, or while stocks last.

4 June: Individual cell capacities for Duracell 2100 posted.

2 June: A reader asked my to expand on why I prefer the Ansmann Energy 8 over the Maha C808M. My email response kept on bouncing so I decided to post it here. The Annsmann, in my opinion:

1. is a better build quality (arguable point)
2. has more functionality, as it has a first rate battery tester. I use this quite a bit;
3. is cheaper;
4. is very much set and forget, and it will automatically recondition the batteries when needed.

For me that sets it apart, it is a better rounded charger. The Maha is very good, but I believe the Ansmann is better again for the reasons I have give.

31 May: Individual cell capacities for Eveready 2000 posted. Capacity of the Eveready 2000 is almost 20% above their rated capacity, no wonder the Doc always liked this battery set.

28 May: Individual cell capacities for M-Energy 2700 posted.

21 May: Individual cell capacities for Powertech 2500 posted.

21 May: Powertech 2500 mAh AA battery report posted.

20 May: The AA comparison graph has been updated. View here.

19 May: UNiROSS 2300 mAh AA battery report posted.

14 May: Individual cell capacities for the UNiROSS 2300 posted. Ooops looks like I forgot to post the runtime results for this battery set. I have found the data and will try and post it later this week.

13 May: The Doc has been overseas for the last week, so the results will start again shortly.

5 May: Individual cell capacities for Sanyo 2700 posted.

4 May: Individual cell capacities for Powerex 2700 posted.

2 May: Individual cell capacities for PolarPower 2600 posted.

1 May: Individual cell capacities for Duracell 2300 posted.

30 April: Individual cell capacities for Camplus2800 posted.

27 April: Individual cell capacities for Powertech 2400 posted.

26 April: Individual cell capacities for MultiPower 2000 posted.

25 April: The Doc recently tested his oldest batteries sets. The Sanyo 2100 and Powerex 2100 are now over 3 years old. The average cell capacity was 1810 mAh for the Sanyos and 1705 mAh for the Powerex. Both battery sets still work well and there are no signs of any bad cells. In contrast, about 5 sets of Chinese made batteries are have one or more defective cells.

19 April: Individual cell capacities for UNiROSS 2700 AA posted.

10 April: Individual cell capacities for Hybrio 2100 posted.

9 April: The Doc has modified the testing procedures. The aim is to give the user more information about a battery set. After the test is run, the battery set will be placed in the La Crosse BC-9000 charger and tested again (using the La Crosse BC-9000 “Test” cycle). As the La Crosse BC-9000 charger gives individual cell capacity, The Doc and then publish that information. It is not an exact procedure, because the actual test results (using the UBA charger) are not coming from the same charging cycle as the cell capacity (the La Crosse BC-9000), but at least it is a guide. Another column has been added to the review page graphing the results. The individual capacity of 4 cells, together with the average of the 4 cells will be graphed. The first graph is posted today giving the Sanyo eneloop results. These tests have taken some time, but the The Doc has noticed some patterns that he will comment on in the coming weeks.

30 March: The Doc is back from an overseas trip.

22 March: UNiROSS 2700 mAh AA battery report posted. Best performer of the Chinese batteries, also worked very well in a portable hard drive in the field.

18 March: A reader sent me an email today, but the email got caught up in my spam filters and I lost the email. Can you please resend.

8 March: UNiROSS Hybrio 2100 mAh AA battery report posted. Impressive performance, even better than the Sanyo eneloop. Price check here. Now The Docs' value choice for AA batteries.

7 March: The Doc has been busy testing, results will be posted shortly. The Hybrio results may surprise!

25 February: The prices used on the graphs are a guide only. Prices vary over time and between retailers. Users should check prices before they purchase. The Doc does not have the time, nor the desire to, update prices everyday!

19 February: Off topic tonight. Some friends of mine started a skin care business using all natural products. I was so impressed that I bought some of the company. OLIVE by Langlois’ online shop went live this afternoon. The first 50 Australian orders come with free postage. Website and Online shop.

19 February: The AA comparison graph has been updated. View here.

18 February: PolarPower 2600 mAh AA battery report posted.

12 February: Over the years, The Doc has used 4 different types of battery cartridges (Powertech, Sanyo, La Crosse & Rezap). The Rezap is easily the best battery cartridge. All the other brands have major flaws of one form or another. The Powertech falls apart, the Sanyo cannot be used in torches, the La Crosses is poorly made. The Rezap suffers from none of these flaws, although the quality of construction could be better. So if you need C and D rechargeable batteries, why not use the Rezap with your high powered AA batteries. Price check here.

11 February: The AAA comparison graph has been updated. View here.

10 February: Powertech 900 mAh AAA battery report posted.

5 February: The Battery Wizard has a Super Special this week, bulk packs of eneloop batteries (16 AAs or 8AAs & 8AAAs) for only $75 plus postage, not bad as Dick Smith is charging $24.99 per 4 pack!

4 February: The AAA comparison graph has been updated. View here.

1 February: Sanyo 1000 mAh AAA battery report posted.

29 January: Last year, The Doc compared 3 el cheap chargers. Now The Doc has now tested each charger using the Eveready 2000 AA batteries as the test battery set. The Doc compared each chargers performance. Results can be viewed here. Surprisingly, the results were all fairly close. Remember you need to closely match the battery set with most el cheapo chargers. The Dorcy & the Eveready el cheapo charger will not adequately charge a battery set over 2100 mAh.

28 January: Powertech 2400 mAh AA battery report posted.

24 January: The Universal Battery Charger Table has been updated by adding the superb Ansmann Energy 8, which The Doc likes even more than the Maha C808-M. The Rezap specification have also been updated again (thanks to the reader that spotted the error). The Vanson Speedy Box rein as a recommended Universal charger of choice is at end. In fact, the Ansmann is the best fully automatic charger the The Doc has used.

22 January: The AA comparison graph has been updated. View here.

21 January: Sanyo 2700 mAh AA battery report posted.

17 January: The methodology used to test the various battery sets can be read here.

15 January: The AA comparison graph has been updated. View here.

14 January: This is the first time The Doc has tested a battery set made in Singapore, the results are disappointing. Duracell 2300 mAh AA battery report posted.

9 January: Universal Charger Table updated. Maha C808M charger also added.

7 January: Recently, on Bulletin Boards, there has been threads where users are blaming battery manufacturers for poor quality cells. Sorry folks, the problems are not caused (in the majority of cases) by poor quality cells, but rather by very fast chargers and users having poor charging techniques. Most high capacity AA cells are not designed to be charged in less than 2 hours, never mind 15 or 30 minutes! You will, at some time, damage most AA cells charging them that fast. There are trade-offs between charging speed and cell life. The Doc has prepared a Table setting out which factors result in more recharges over the life of a battery, and conversely what factors will result in shorter battery life. Click here. In over 3 years, The Doc has only had 2 AA cells that were damaged/defective, both Chinese made. AAA cells are not made to as high a standard and are more susceptible to damage and leakage, compared to AA cells. So extra care is needed when charging AAA cells.

2006

23 December: The Doc has been testing but not posting the results because Christmas is upon us! There will be plenty more battery reviews in 2007, The Doc already has data for about any 8 battery sets.

12 December: The Doc was looking at battery chargers and rechargeable batteries on eBay the other week. Price definitely trumps quality - a lot of product is cheap Chinese made junk. If you want to make a purchase on eBay, make a careful selection. Otherwise you will be disappointed with both performance and quality. Do no not believe me? Then Multiple Power is a common battery brand, and just look at its performance in The Docs tests (summary: dreadful performance & poor build quality). In my opinion, it is better to buy at the good-quality online battery shops. You get quality and good after sales service.

11 December: UNiROSS 900 mAh AAA battery report posted.

10 December: CamPlus 2800 mAh AA battery report posted.

5 December: Sanyo eneloop 800 mAh AAA report posted. This the Doc's new performance choice for AAA batteries. In The Doc's experience, AAA batteries have always self discharged before the battery was exhausted by the device. So the extra long shelf life (over 12 months), means the Sanyo eneloop wins The Doc's performance award.

5 December: Mini update of Best Buys.

4 December: Sanyo eneloop 2000 mAh AA battery report posted. Good performance for a 2000 mAh rated battery, but the slow self discharge rate means they can beyo eneloop 2000 mAh AA battery report posted. Good performance for a 2000 mAh rated battery, but the slow self discharge rate means they can be used in torches, computer mice and other toys. They are a great choice for toys as well.

28 November: Varta 800 mAh AAA battery report posted.

26 November: Duracell 2100 mAh AA battery report posted.

23 November: The mini charger Table has been updated. The 3 el cheapo chargers have been added, the previous chargers have been refreshed and the CamPlus Intercept and Maha C401FS added. The CamPlus Intercept becomes The Doc’s new performance choice for mini chargers

22 November: The Doc has been wondering whether the Sanyo eneloop batteries need to be charged a few times before they reach full capacity (like other Ni-MH batteries). The tests are done and the results are mixed. The Sanyo eneloop AAs definitely needed 3 or 4 charges before taking a full charge. Whereas, the Sanyo eneloop AAAs took a full charge the first time. To make matters more confusing the Sanyo eneloop AAs performed well out of the pack , whereas the AAAs performed poorly out of the pack. So confusion all round. At least both battery sets actually took a charge around the rated capacity, that has not happened in a long time! Final results will be posted over the next week or so.

19 November: Multiple Power 2000 mAh AA battery report posted. Dreadful performance, poor build quality (one of the worst I have seen). Avoid.

16 November: Multiple Power 900 mAh AAA battery report posted.

15 November: Eveready 2000 mAh AA battery report posted.

15 November: The AA comparison graph has been updated. View here.

14 November: Over the last 2 years it has been hard to get excited over chargers, but how things have changed. I have been using, on and off, the fabulous new CamPlus Intercept. It beats the Powerbase C-T3 hands down and costs just over $50. Take a look at the specs and price here. When time permits I will do a more detailed review – but it will take a Best Buy Award. It is not the only charger that has impressed me lately, the Powerex MH-C808M is also a fantastic charger, more suitable for the demanding digital photographer it can charge up to 8 AA, AAA, C or D size batteries at once and it is fast. Take a look here and also check out it little AA & AAA brother.

11 November: A bulk special on the Sanyo eneloop batteries over at The Battery Wizard, 4 packs (16 batteries) for $85 plus postage (either 16 AAs or 8AAs & 8 AAAs). Great price, click here and look at the bottom of the page.

11 November: The AAA comparison graph has been updated. View here.

10 November: Varta 2100 mAh AA battery report posted.

6 November: The Doc has tested and compared 3 el cheapo Chinese chargers. One by Eveready, another by Dorcy and the last by Power Expert. The Doc has never been keen on el cheapo chargers with limited safety features, it is just plain false economy (batteries are not properly charged and can be easily damaged). One of the chargers came close to being put on The Doc's recommended list, but (yes there are always buts) it was let down but cheap build quality and some design faults. What might have been! Click here.

6 November: M-Energy 2700 mAh AA battery report posted. An alleged rating of 2700 mAh is hard to believe. Avoid.

6 November: M-Energy 2700 mAh AA battery report posted.

5 November: CamPlus 900 mAh AAA battery report posted.

3 November: The AAA comparison graph has been updated. View here.

2 November: Dorcy Failsafe 750 mAh AAA battery report posted.

1 November: The UNiROSS Hybrio 2100 mAh and the Sanyo eneloop 2000 mAh go head to head. These are the new type of Ni-MH batteries that can hold a good charge for over 12 months (4-5 times longer than the average Ni-MH battery). I have a set of Sanyo 2700s that I bought at the same time, and they lasted 5 minutes out of the packet! So this shows you how well these new battery types went. Each battery is tested straight out of the packet. The eneloop is rated typically 2000 mAh (minimum 1900 mAh) and the Hybrio is rated 2100 mAh. Sanyo give date of manufacture, but UNIROSS do not, so this is not a scientific comparison, but rather a general guide. Results can be viewed here.

31 October: The UNiROSS Hybrio 2100 mAh AA battery report is posted. The Hybrio are a competitor of the Sanyo eneloop. Unfortunately UNiROSS do not give the date of manufacture, so there can be no precise comparison with the eneloop straight of the packet. The Hybrio are rated 2100 mAh verse the eneloop 2000 mAh, the performance of both brands out of the packet was excellent. The eneloop are better made and are they are visually stunning. In fact, the best looking battery I have seen.

30 October: Sanyo eneloop 2000 mAh AA battery report posted. The batteries were made in May 2006 and tested on 29 Oct. So they were at least 5 months old. That is fantastic performance for a Ni-MH battery. Further testing using the UBA charger under way.

29 October: The graph formats have been updated again. Since I will no longer be publishing the long reports for batteries (to speed up testing), I have decided to add some more information to the Voltage Graph. The additional information will include: brand, capacity, charge used in test, origin of battery (e.g. China, Japan, etc.), cost for a set of 4 batteries, the weight (in grams) of battery set and the month of testing. The Duracell AAA graph is the first to use the revised format. I will update the published graphs when I get a chance.

29 October: The AA battery performance table has been updated and the format changed to be consistent with the new graph format for the site. View here.

28 October: Duracell 1000 mAh AAA battery report posted.

5 October: The Doc is on holidays, so it will be quite for a few weeks. But upon his return there are 6 battery sets to test and a charger review to complete.

3 October: The voltage comparison graph of the AAA battery sets has been posted. View here.

2 October: The format of the AAA battery reports are now consistent with the new AA format. New voltage and Temperature graphs have been added.

2 October: Sanyo 2300 AA battery report posted using the new methodology. I run these tests at the time of the original 5 ohm test. The voltage comparison graph was also updated.

1 October: The Doc has added an RSS feed to the site. Click here. If you want to learn about RSS Feeds look here.

1 October: Voltage comparison graph of the AA battery sets over 2000 mAh can be viewed here.

1 October: Powerex 2700 AA battery report posted.

30 September: There have been some changes to the site and there's more to come. Going forward, the main change is the way in which I present the battery reports.  While I am able to test batteries in a timely fashion, it is taking me a long time to write the reports.  In an attempt to reduce this delay I have changed the report format. I will now present the reports in a table giving running time, the voltage graph (now in Flash format), the temperature at graph (also in Flash) and some comments. I have already made these changes to the recent report on AA batteries. Over time, I will also make these changes to the AAA reports.

25 September: If you find this website helpful, why not support the companies that help obtain batteries and chargers for The Doc test. Go over to The Battery Wizard and they have just cut the prices of most AA batteries and the Powertech AAAs.

15 September: I have made some revisions to the Powerex 2500 review (not affecting the performance). I have also checked the Sanyo 2500 review and believe it is accurate.

14 September: I have made an error in testing the Powerex 2500 batteries. I am trying to determine whether the mistake was a typo in the report or a mistake in methodology. I will also check the Sanyo 2500 tests as well. I can retest the Powerex, but too much time has past for the Sanyos. So I may run new tests on Sanyo 2700s instead. Despite this, I can say the real world performance of the Powerex 2500 and Sanyo in Canon flashes and portable hard drives is the best of any battery set I have used. Sorry about the mix up.

30 August: Price cut to one of my favourite chargers the Vanson Speedy Box (Powertech here in Australia) over at The Battery Wizard.

30 July: After many attempts I finally have my graphing program working again. The AA graphs have been updated (they now also work with Firefox). I have added a third graph for AA batteries, for 2500 mAh or over. Click here.

23 July: I am writing a review on the Maha Powerex MH-C808M. It can charge between one and eight AA / AAA / C / D NiMH or NiCD batteries in any combination. It is Idea for digital photographers or those who need to charge C and D batteries regularly (eg Labs or doctors surgeries). It is great charger for those who make exceptional demands on their chargers. They are available in Australia, look here.

15 July: Review of the Maha Powerex 2500 AAs is up using the new methodology. Read here. Finally a brand that challenges the Sanyo in terms of quality and performance. My thanks to the Australian distributor for the batteries and the charger (review being written). There are plenty of other Maha goodies on the website.

3 June: Updated site.

3 March: I have been advised that the new generation of chargers will now be delivered in late April. I'm looking forward to testing the new chargers.

20 March: It is time to give some feedback on some of the products I have tested over the last couple of years. The Powertech AAA batteries leaked and had to be thrown away. The Sanyo AAA’s are going exceptionally well. Paying a little more for Sanyo quality pays for itself in the long term. If you are going to buy rechargeable batteries buy a quality brand rather than cheap Chinese imports.

24 March: Do not charge Grandcell AAA Ni-MH batteries in a Maha charger – it gives you a new definition of hot! Luckily I checked, if I had waited much longer, the batteries would have exploded or caught fire.

28 February: Working on a review for a new type of battery cartridge.

30 January: The chargers have still not arrived!!!!

10 January: The chargers have not arrived yet.

2005
1 December: New generation chargers are being released in December. But I will not hold my breath waiting for them to arrive on time.
17 October: Updated Best Buys page.
4th July: Sorry about the lack of updates but I been very busy, including marking a PhD Thesis (there is a reason why I call myself The Doc!).
18th April:
The Varta Charger Review is up. Click here.
11th April:
The Varta Charger Review is finished, but needs to be proofread before the Review is posted.
29th March: An improved version of the battery case reviewed last year has arrived. Read the new Review here, The new version now has The Doc's recommendation, a good case is now great due to the improvements.
28th March:
Some more observations on the 2 fast chargers The Doc has been playing with. The Varta 15 minute charger, uses special batteries, the AA batteries bodies are about 1 mm shorter than a normal AA, whereas the charging nipple is 1mm extra in length. This means the charger will only charge the Varta "special" AA 15 minute batteries in the fast mode (ie 15 minutes). The Powerbase 1 hour charger does not seem to be fully charging a battery set, results to be confirmed.
16th March: The Doc is currently playing with 2 very fast chargers, a 15 minute version and a one hour version. The 15 minute charger uses special batteries so the normal charger tests cannot be used in fast mode. The Doc is having trouble taking a decent photo. Comments in due course.
19th February:
Added report on the Titanium PowPower charger.
26th January:
Added report for Sanyo 2500 mAh AA. For some time I've been getting unusual results when using the standard testing load of 5 ohms.  Going forward, the test load will be 10 ohms.  The Doc is in the process of updating the methodology on the website.  The Doc will further explain his reasoning when that is updated. The Sanyo 2500 is the first battery to be tested using the revised methodology.
24th January: Updated the Best Buys page. Sanyo 2500s now the performance champion, and the Sanyo 2100s the value for money choice.
23th January:
The Vanson Speedy Box review is up. Click here.
19th January:
If you find the information on this website useful, why not purchase some products from The Battery Wizard who supply products for the The Doc to test - the only company that does I might add. You get keen pricing, great service and quality after sales service.
16th January:
Review of the Vanson Speedy Box nearing completion. Still need to take a few photos and proof the Report, maybe last this week. The Doc is also working on the Sanyo 2500 AA review and a review of the Battery Fighter (a car battery charger).
7th January: Heat is an unavoidable consequence of charging batteries.  Heat management is therefore an important part of good charging technique.  Most users will experience some difficulty with heat during the summer months, especially in Australia. Common examples include, overheating chargers, batteries not being fully charged because they're too hot (or charge slowly because they're hot), etc.  Fast chargers are more susceptible to problems due to heat, however even the Rezap Battery Doctor can have problems with slot 4 because of its proximity to the transformer.  There are some simple steps you can take to overcome these problems: place the charger near an open window which has a cool breeze, place the charger near a ceiling fan or purchase a cheap fan from a $2 shop and point it towards the charger.  Many chargers have a clear plastic cover which should be left up during charging. Personally The Doc uses a small cheap fan and directed towards the charger.  This has been very effective.
