TIPS
FOR NEW AMATEURS
APRIL22 2006
Dear
new Lic. holder. Welcome to our great hobby.
I would just like to convey a few simple facts to you for all our benefit.
Please
appreciate that most Amateurs that you are now joining have completed and
passed up to SEVEN Exams, 4 of them in Morse Code and
spent around 6 - 12 months studying to get their Licenses.
Many have failed and tried for a certain License MANY TIMES. I
just ask you to respect this fact compared to the Foundation Lic. weekend
course and VERY generous band privileges - equal roughly to an
"old" Limited Lic. holder (the level before a Full Call - 5 WPM
Morse, Full Reg's, Full Theory)! It has been a BIG change.
ALL
Amateurs should have a WIA CALL\YEAR BOOK (available from Clubs or the WIA
Web Site) an ARRL and\or RSGB Handbook and ALL the ACMA's Amateur LCD's
(available from the ACMA's Web Site) at THE VERY
LEAST. (see the Foundation Lic. Page) If you ain't got them, you
AIN'T really an AMATEUR! I certainly hope you have substantial
respect for the bands, your privileges and all other Amateurs as I do, (I
studied too hard not too!) and we should all get along fine.
THE
BEST WAY YOU COULD SHOW RESPECT to ALL OTHER
Amateurs is to firstly know the law concerning calling ON AIR and call sign
usage in the ACMA'S AMATEUR LCD'S. Secondly, READ
CAREFULLY the VOICE REPEATER OPERATING PROCEDURES (usually in the
WIA Call Book) and abide by them to the tea as this is likely the first
place you will transmit. Study all other mode's of operating
procedure like IRLP, HF etc. etc. BEFORE YOU
TRANSMIT and USE THEM, and listen to other operators.
Secondly, FOLLOW THE BAND PLANS to the letter, THEY
ARE VERY IMPORTANT. You may be Transmitting eg. on an Amateur
TV (5 Meg's WIDE) frequency, and you will hear NOTHING on your FM
Transceiver, but cause substantial interference! Also, aspire
to be a professional operator!
We
are all one big group, and if you want to get off-side with the hundreds
that listen to you at any one time, just operate
badly or "kerchunk" Repeaters and you've done it. DON'T THINK we
do not know who the Repeater "kerchunkers" or unidentified
stations are, WE DO! Please note that ALL OF THE
ABOVE comments include ALL OF US, ie. EVERY AMATEUR OPERATOR.
Finally,
ALL UNLICENSED PERSONS MAY WISH TO KNOW THIS
... Section 189 of the Act makes it an offence
to operate or supply, or possess for the purposes of operation or supply, a
prohibited device, without reasonable excuse. Section 189 also
details the penalties that apply if a person is found guilty:
If the offender is an individual -
Imprisonment for two years or otherwise 1,500 penalty units (currently
$165,000). See Section 46, 47 & 48
of the Radiocommunications Act 1992
Don't
forget that Amateur Radio is for Inter-Communication and the Technical
Investigation in to Radio ............ SO LEARNING DOESN'T STOP WHEN YOUR
GET YOU LICENSE. IT JUST STARTS!!!
I
welcome you all to Amateur Radio, and to the fun in learning, building and
experimenting! I hope I end up friend's to you all and I hope that my
fears in my last post's are unfounded. Please
prove me WRONG!!!!
All
the best ... Rob ... VK5MM
