Mission 6: Boot Camp/The Book of Chnages
Boot Camp
DD takes three team members out to a deserted industrial site and clones them up for a bit of practice. This is the first training level - you can't lose these but can gain a decent XP bonus for the participants by fulfilling the primary objectives.
The first character you select has to fight their clones by themselves, the other two team up to fight each other's clones, so team selection and order of selection is all important here. There are no cannisters, but there are a number of lamposts and also oil barrels near the two-character arena for you to use.
Note: this level was hard before the patch - afterwards its pretty much impossible due to the clones ability to use direct attacks. This includes King Zero's Ice Up and Anemone's Telepathic Goad, both of which cause you to lose control of your character.
King Zero: not a bad choice. He's quite immune to his own fists, but the clones will take full damage from lampposts. Expect to be density altered all the time and frozen at least half the time, this is a battle to get to the nearest lampost and start swinging. Ice Slide will make this much easier (and doesn't get used by the clones).
Overall a good choice.
Adam Zorn: Immune to his own attacks pretty much, making a solo battle very drawn out. Adam is kind of handy for team ups, oddly enough his panicking is a good thing here in that he'll often run off from being cloned and start away from the masses.
Anemone: If you aren't patched, she's very good at taking down her own clones. If you are, forget it. They'll enrage her (and her teammate) permanently and you get to watch them fail. You can try flying away and enraging a clone from a distance, they'll keep each other busy with rage and hypnosis if you do.
The Fly: Not bad. You need to use your head here - shrink or fly away from the clones and take them down from a distance using objects. The clones are of course copies of the original Fly, who packs a mean punch that can stun you, so if you get surrounded its over.
The Spider: Never fails to fall to her own clones. You spend your whole time permanently stunned or webbed on your own, you might just stand a chance with a teammate.
Recommended tactics:
King Zero stands the best chance on his own, and is useful for the real work ahead. For the team up, take one melee (fly/anemone) and one ranged attacker (adam/spider), making sure that there's at least one scientist on the team for the coming battle. The only Combo move available is anemone and King Zero's Unholy Terror - Ive never actually tried that in here.
The Book of Changes
Oh dear. You start off with a normal teenage girl against an entire animated city. The real target here of course are the Brothers Jab - three glowing blue demon imps who run around bringing cars, mailboxes, lamposts and even buildings to life if there's noone nearby to attack.
Your first priority is to transform Penny into Chaos - get to the phone around the corner and dial AlCuBUS's number, then immediately call the Strangers for help. They'll appear in about a minute - head for the spot there to meet up with them once Chaos is activated.
Until they arrive, keep Penny in gaseous form, and away from the demons. This is especially important because her gas form will wear off during the cutscene where the Strangers appear, leaving her immediately vulnerable to attack and unable to displace herself if, for example she gets repeatedly shot into the air.
The demons:
Despite what it says in the database afterwards, each demon actually has a single melee and a single area attack. The demons powers are:
Jabbit - melee exile with knockback, area effect upwards knockback (a la Alchemiss aloft)
Gibbit - melee clone with multiple contacts, area alteration (random effects)
Jabbagibbit - melee hex (plus explosion effect characteristic of the Strangers campaign), area effect molecular excitation. Basically he makes you explode and then all props around you explode when you go near them. Ouch!
The demons also absorb heat and energy and mystical damage, making Adam Zorn particularly useless against them. (except as a combo tool - see below). Similarly, the spider's webs don't work on them (but taser does), so King Zero is very handy for keeping a demon remotely immobilised. Acid burn works, and has the added advantage of highlighting them if they turn invisible.
This mission is basically a case of wading through the animated streets to get to the demons - anemone's telepathic scan is extremely handy here for finding the little guys (only they and the giant duck buildings get highlighted).
Animated Objects:
The lamposts come in two varieties - flying stunning ones and melee attackers. They're pretty weak, and trigger an electrical explosion when they deactivate (which can cause a chain reaction), so you can try to use them as bombs to get the other creatures.
Note that deactivated creatures can be reanimated by the demons.
Most props are metal, the phone booths are rubber/plastic, making King Zero a handy guy to have on your side once again.
Animated Buildings:
When the buildings appear use a scientist (you did bring one right?) to direct Penny to crack their gas mains if you're after the secondary obejctive. This causes them to visibly leak gas until damaged, at which point they repeatedly explode and take damage until they fall. If you can do this from a distance, good luck.
Otherwise, try to stay out of their way. They'll squirt water at any fliers that approach and otherwise rely on melee attacks. King Zero and Adam Zorn dish out the damage best here.
Chaos'll definitely slow the team down- leaving King Zero as bodyguard while faster characters scan the city for the demons is a good idea, plus they can pool their powers as shown below.
Chaos's arrival unlocks three new combo powers:
She can transmute Adam Zorn's outer layer to either Uranium or Magnesium, causing him to explode in a few seconds either in a blinding/stunning flash or an irradiating explosion. There's a small chance of stunning him, but usually he has time to teleport into position afterwards before going off.
In gas form, king zero can supercool Chaos so that she delivers a freezing area attack at regular intervals in addition to her normal acid burn attack.
Conclusion: Take Anemone, Spider and King Zero with you. For the clone level use KZ as the first player and he might just beat the clones, or anemone if youre playing pre-patch.
