The Lyons Den - Amateur Radio

G'day ....

I'm Morrie, contentedly retired after 32 years teaching mathematics. I have plenty of hobbies that keep me occupied ... my family, grandchildren, travel, electronics (VK3BCC), computers, digital photography, sports viewing, nature, reading, walking and more.

I have had a lifelong interest in electronics.

As a schoolboy growing up in country Australia in the 1950's (pre TV days), I was amazed that you could go to a ham's shack and talk to somebody on the other side of the world.   Now-a-days of course it is means nothing to young people; they can pick up a mobile phone and easily speak to another mobile person anywhere, or send photos.

My grandmother ran a rural post office and manual telephone exchange.  In order to make an international call in the 1950's she had to ring the nearest big town.  They had to ring Melbourne and book the call.  Three hours later the phone subscriber got the call connected.
In 1967, well before the days of STD dialling, on a trip to outback Queensland we got stranded by floooding and had to send telegrams home.  At the telephone exchange at the back of the small Post Office there, it was possible for the operator to dial almost anywhere in Australia from her one rotary dial.  Amazing progress!!

I obtained my VK3BCC licence in 1974 and over the years I have had many contacts on VHF and HF.

These days computers and the Internet have dominated my electronic interests and Amateur Radio has taken a back seat, particularly with my other hobbies and interests.

I am a WIA member and a life member of the Moorabbin and District Radio Club.
